As I stepped out of the carriage he had supplied, I thanked the coachman for a smooth ride and made my may inside, only to find the house full of the silence that follows the Longest night.
I hurriedly made my way to the Wing and changed out of my dress. It didn't need any mending, but it would definitely require some cleaning. I put on a simple outfit, a gown of popeline, green with a hint of flowery brocard, and readjusted my braids into a tightly knit bun at the nape of my neck.
I was crossing the hall again, on my way to the children's chambers when I crossed Valeraine's path.
I blushed in apology "I'm sorry I'm late Valeraine. As you see, I'm on my way to the children's adobe."
She smiled in amusement "And what to do, my hurried child? Don't you remember, you have leave this morning, how could you forget?"
That was so typical of me, I thought. "I guess I had my mind elsewhere, Valeraine. Well I guess that gives me time to tend to my marque, not a bad thing at all, if you ask me."
"Indeed. Well, have a good time there then," she said as she headed back to her chambers.
She stopped in her first step and stopped me. "Géraldine, you took a patron last night - hasn't it been a month since your last assignation?"
I couldn't help but stare at the floor as I answered. "Yes Valeraine, it's been a while, not since...." She interrupted me "...not since that handsome foreigner, I remember, Géraldine. Well, your heart is fluttering again, after all?" she added with a hint of amusement.
"I guess it is," I said with a smile. "But I'd rather not discuss it for now. To be sincere, I would rather it didn't this time," I added somberly.
Valeraine patted my arm. "Well I'm happy to see you are back in the swing of things, child. You know where to find me if anything needs to be said."
With that, she left me in the silence of the House. I quietly made for the door, ready to walk to the marquist. It had been a while since I had paid him a visit and I shuddered at the thought of the pain the Marquist would cause me, though part of me did not despise the rough pleasure of his touch.
