I kissed her back. Clung to her like she was the only thing keeping me afloat in a storm. Because in a way, she was. I wrapped my arms around her, and when our lips parted, I buried my face in her hair.

My arms went around him and I held him to me, lending him silent comfort and support. My fingers gently stroked the spot where his hair laid against his neck.
“I love you,” I whispered after a moment.

Slowly, ever so slowly, I relaxed against her. Despite all the fights we'd had, I had been happier with her than I had been since my parents had sent me away. It counted in the face of Pierre's hate and scorn.
I kept my arms around her, not strong enough to let go just yet. "Thank you. For being with me. Last time, I was alone."

“You’re not alone anymore, ever,” I said softly. “I will stand with you against anything, my love. We have weathered far worse than your older brother and survived, we will make it through this.”

"You know what the worst thing is? I used to look up to him so much. He was my big brother. And he hated me, hates me, as much as Mama did," I whispered. I never talked about this, ever. But if anyone would understand, would keep holding me no matter what my family was like, it was Mala.

“No one can hurt you like family can,” I murmured, caressing his neck still.

His cursing made me smile softly. It would be better for him to be angry at Pierre, to use that as a shield against further hurt.
“Henri and Marie seem to love you very much,” I said, still smiling.

"Marie figured out the story my parents told to explain my absence was a lie when I went back for my mother's funeral," I replied. Tension crept back as I thought about my mother. My last image of her, she had been spitting she was so angry, telling me how disgusting I was when I wouldn't leave. "They were both too young when I first left to hear the truth. I just suddenly became a taboo subject apparently, and Marie isn't stupid. Pierre knew though. He had plenty of years to listen to my parents. He'd always been a brat."

“I think brat is too kind a word for Pierre,” I murmured, holding him a little closer as I felt his tension returning. I rested my head against his. “My love, I wish there was something I could do to make this better for you.”

"No one can change the past. Besides, even if you could, then I never would have met you," I whispered, wiping an eye with the back of my hand.

“And without you, I never would have survived,” I whispered, a chill running through me at the thought of a life without ever having met him. “I love you Christophe.”

"And I love you right back," I replied. "In the end, it worked out. I found a home at Valerian, and then I met you. And somehow I convinced you to marry me. Still don't know how I got so lucky." My lips, ever so softly, lifted up into a smile as I reminded myself that my life now was good, and I was happy, no matter what my brother thought of me.

“Funny, I was just wondering how I got so lucky,” I said. I pressed my body closer to his. “Do you think Henri and Marie liked me?”

"Yes," I replied with simple conviction. "Henri will be a bit shy I think, because he's not used to beautiful, sophisticated women. And I saw the look on Marie's face when you went off to fetch Pierre. She wanted to watch. She likes that you stand up to him."

I chuckled softly. “Then she at least will keep liking me, for I don’t plan to do anything but stand up to him. He’s an ass. He actually thought he could intimidate me.”

"Love, he is as ignorant as much as he's an ass. It didn't surprise me in the least that he tried that. What did the two of you say to each other up there?" I asked curiously.

“I asked if he’d like me to show him to his room, I wasn’t about to let him go prowling through our house unescorted. Then I asked him why he hated me, to which he asked why I thought he hated me. I explained to him how easy he was to read. He tried to be coy and say I’d just have to wonder, then he sulked off to begin opening doors. I stopped him and explained to him where his room was, the one by the back stairs, and then welcomed him again to our home,” I said, giving him the highlights.

"Yes, that sounds like my brother. Does he still stalk off like he used to when he didn't get his way?" I asked.

“I don’t know if it’s the same stalk, but he definitely stalks off,” I answered, chuckling softly. “It was almost cute, watching him think he could intimidate me with his size.”

I shook my head. "I probably don't need to say this, but I'm going to anyway. Be careful love. I don't know how much control he has over his temper."

“Probably more control than I have over my temper,” I said, chuckling again. “Perhaps someone should warn him about me.”
I lifted my head so that I could look at him, my mood sobering. “I know he’s your brother, but I won’t stand for having him in this house if he’s going to keep treating you like he did today. I don’t care what he says to me or thinks of me, but I won’t let him keep hurting you Christophe.”

I sighed. "Hopefully the two of us can stay out of each other's way. I'd hate to throw him out, and then have him drag Marie and Henri with him."

“Just because he goes, doesn’t mean Marie and Henri would have to go to. They are of age, they are welcome here as long as you want them love,” I said, smiling. I caressed his cheek softly. “I will even be nice to Pierre if you’d like me to. Kill him with kindness.”

"Don't be nice, just be yourself. It's enough to flummox even a regular man," I teased her with a smile, then leaned in and kissed her swiftly.

I kissed her again, more soundly this time, then pulled back slightly. "Can't get too carried away before dinner. But tonight, I'm going to show just how grateful I am to you for making me feel better," I told her with a smile, caressing her cheek.

I leaned into his caress. “Guess I’ll have to start being less vocal in the bedroom now that we have house guests,” I said, smiling.
