There had seemed to be a bit of disturbance in Heliotrope, but I paid little attention to it. I was too happy from my time with Luke to worry about gossip.
The dining hall was filled with adepts as we were just finishing our evening meal. Before anyone could leave, Dowayne Valeraine entered and stood at the front of the hall. She looked tired and weighed down by something as she waited for everyone's attention. A hush fell over the room and all eyes were on the Dowayne.
"I am afraid I have upsetting news to share with you. On their way home from the coronation celebration, the new King and Queen were attacked. King Ambrose was left for dead, Queen Triselene and all others were killed. The King lives, but is in a sleep from which they can not wake him. Princess Sabrina de la Courcel has been named Acting Regent." She stopped, drawing a deep breath before going on. "These are the facts, this is all that is known as of now. I do not want to hear of any adept from this House embellishing on the facts that I have just shared with you. If I should have any more news to inform you of, I will call you back to the hall."
With that, she turned and left. The silence remained even after she was gone as we all sat stunned. I felt my chin trembling and tears welled in my eyes. I remembered how I had felt in the presence of my new King and Queen, and I grieved at our nation's loss. My hand went to the bracelet I still wore, wishing Luke was here to wrap me in his arms.

I'd slept late today. Lucien had kept me up most of the night, and the combination of exhuastion, satisfaction and worry took their toll. I woke to the late afternoon sunshine and smiled. Meda would come tonight.
I went about preparing for her visit, and was entirely oblivious to the darkening mood of the House. For a change I took supper with the rest of the adepts instead of eating in my rooms. I was just too nervous to sit in one place for long.
So Valeraine's announcement poleaxed me.
The Queen dead and the King as good as? It seemed surreal. I glanced around at the other tables and saw that many felt as I did. Worse, tears had started to flow.
I had never met the king or queen, in fact i hardly knew many nobles at all. But the fact that someone had attacked them, had thrown the land into a tailspin made me angry.
