I slipped silently into the House, but hadn't taken two steps when I heard my name: "Maeve."
I froze, turning to face Valeraine, who had a bemused look on her face. "What kept you?" she asked.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I met Prince Alexei and Allisande no' Dahlia, and we had tea, and then I accidentally bumped into a noble lady and had to offer my apologies."
"Ah," said Valeraine. "Do you know who the lady was?"
I shook my head. "She was very lovely. But she seems to dislike Heliotrope adepts very much."
Valeraine threw her head back and let out a laugh. "My dear," she said, "That was Evangeline L'Envers."
I turned crimson. A L'Envers? No wonder she had been so angry, she was very nearly royalty. "Oh," I said quietly.
"Ah, my Maeve," Valeraine said. "I forgive you for being late. The children are waiting for you in the nursery, better hurry."
I nodded, curtseying. "Thank you." With that I hurried off down the corridor to the nursery.
Pushing open the familiar door, I gazed around the room. This was where I myself had grown up. But my attention was pulled by the many cries of, "Maeve! Maeve!" as she children gathered around my feet.
"Hello, my loves," I said, clapping my hands. "If you will sit quietly, we can begin..."
