Traitors, the both of them.
I got into the carriage, murmuring something to the driver about following them and then slumped back into my seat to sulk over the hatred I felt for this damned city.

I coudl feel my cheeks warm even more and I ducked my head, my chin fair touching my chest, trying to hide it. "Oh Marie well... we shall see I suppose," I mumured softly. Who knows if that would come to naught, especially since I was going to be in the City long enough. Some say absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Others say out of sight out of mind.
"Ah well, I will be too busy weeding out all of the bad suitors from the good for you to worry about that," I said with a smile, turning to her and winking, moving the conversation from me to her.

“Yes, I’m sure you’ll have droves of suitors, Henri,” I said, smiling. I looked up at Christophe. “Don’t you think so? I think Henri will be very popular here in the city.”

I laughed at her words. Me? Popular in the City amongst women who... well... amongst women in general. I resisted the urge to stick my tongue out at Mraie in play after she diverted my comment back to her. I was not overmuch worried about my own suitors, but I knew men, and Marie was my only sister, and very beautiful.

I listened to them banter back and forth, only speaking when Marie asked me a question.
"I imagine that you could both find someone, if that's what you want," I replied with a smile which turned teasing. "Though perhaps we could go shopping in a few days, and find something for this Linaya?"

“Oh, I think that’s a wonderful idea,” I said, grinning. Oh Elua, it was so nice to have a real big brother again, someone who would do things like join in the teasing. “Something pretty and frivolous, something obviously from the City. It would win her heart for sure.”

I kicked a rock over the cobblestone, watching it bounce to a stop. "Come on, guys, enough about this, it's not like it is going to happen and especially not anytime soon," I said with a forced chuckle. "Now what about you Christophe, aren't you the one giving up the single life in but a short while? Tying yourself to one? Are you frightened?" I said, snickering. Two could play at this game.

I might have continued to tease him, but I recognized the pout that was beginning to form and decided against it. Instead I chuckled and shook my head. "Not particularly. Besides, I've been hers since I proposed. We've been through a lot together."

“What’s she like?” I asked, eager to hear about this woman who had captured my brother’s heart. He had mentioned almost nothing about her in his letter.

I smiled, thinking how to best describe Mala. I had deliberately not told them Mala's surname, for I wanted them to meet her as free of prejudice as possible. "She's a bit quieter than most, but incredibly intelligent. Determined, loyal to those she deems worthy. Gorgeous of course," I said with a grin. "And fiery."

If there had been any doubt that Christophe loved this woman, they were dispelled in that description. Not just the words but his tone and the look on his face.
“She sounds amazing,” I said. “I already feel like a country mouse without having even met her.”

I smiled with a slight chuckle as he described her. He seemed not just smitten, but in love, and I was happy for him then, though of course, in the back of my mind there were still more questions, not of his love, more of what had happened to make him have such a falling out with us, why Pierre considered him a disgrace. I shook my head, dislodging those thoughts for the moment. There would be plenty of time for these questions later.
"So she loves only you?" I asked as we continued to walk on.

"Last time I checked," I told Henri with a wry smile. If it had been anyone else, I might have taken offense to the rather tactless question, but it was my baby brother. He had never been a candidate for a courtier. "And you shouldn't worry Marie. There are many different types of beauty in this world, just as love. And not only are you beautiful, but I love you," I told her with a smile, mussing up her hair in an attempt not to make the line completely sappy.

"Will she be there when we arrive?" I asked, getting a little excited, and nervous, to meet his future wife. I just hoped that she was good to him. He had had so much cruelty, from his own family at that.... I would hate it to be repeated with yet another.

I tried to hide just how much Christophe’s words meant to me by fixing my hair. I had to blink my eyes to keep the tears from falling. I couldn’t remember Pierre ever having said something like to me.

"Yes, she was just seeing to the last of the preparations for your arrival when I left," I replied, walking around a shallow puddle left by the rain of the night before. "I think it's been a while since our home housed so many people, though there's certainly the space."

As we passed a storefront I glanced at the display in the window and among the other lady’s items there was a lace fan. At first I was struck by how pretty it was, but then my smile faded and I sobered with thoughts of the first town we’d stopped in and the experience in the shop there.
“How much farther?” I asked Christophe, though I kept my eyes on the road ahead of us and didn’t look around anymore.

"Another two and a half blocks. Think you'll make it?" I asked teasingly, wanting to see her smile again, and wondering what had made her face dim in the first place.

“I’ll make it,” I said, nodding a little. I tried to think of anything that would keep him from asking about the change in my mood. “Where did you get the horse?”

Iwatched and listened, looking around me, trying to take everything in, but it was as though my eyes could not rest on one place for too long. I didn't know how in Elua's name I was going to find my way around this bustling place, and was thankful to have Christophe as a guide and both he adn Marie as companions.
I was sad, though, that Pierre had decided just to follow. What would it take to step out of the carriage and walk alongside his family?

After all these years, I could still tell that she didn't want to talk about whatever had brought her down, but it was those same years that kept me from pushing. I didn't know how far I could push anymore. So I let her distract me.
"Mala. It was a gift for my natale," I said with a happy grin. "There was a fair held outside the City walls to celebrate Midsummer, and the horse traders were invited."

“That sounds like fun,” I said. I looked at his horse. “He’s very pretty, and seems really sweet.”

I patted Kaffee's neck. "He's a good chp," I told her with a grin. "As long as I take him out regularly, he doesn't give me too much grief." I was in fact quite proud of him. He was the first horse I had ever owned.

I chuckled. "Perhaps it's in our blood, hey Henri? I was like that for a long time after coming to the City," I said almost offhandedly, seeing the gates of Mala's townhouse. It was mine now as well, I suppose.

I smiled as I was brought out of my near trance, looking around, trying to process all that was around me.
"Hmm?" I said at first, then let the words that had passed sink in, smiling. "Yes, that is true. I cannot bear to be inside a house, a carriage, anything that keeps me away from the land for too long. I need not for anything when I am with her," I said with a smile, though felt my cheeks heat a bit. I had just referred to the land as a woman. I'm sure it sounded a little awkward, but it was the way I saw it. We came closer and closer to a set of gates and I looked to Christophe on his horse. It was a pretty one.
"Is that it?" I asked, pointing to the gates. I had never seen something like that, even just the gates, ornate, at least to my eyes.

It had taken my little brother long enough to answer that we were angling for the gates that he pointed to. "It is indeed," I replied with a smile. "Welcome to our home."
