The weather was grey, slightly colder than it had been, but rather than sitting indoors, curled up with one of the many books I loved reading on days like this, I decided to head out. My feet itched, so to speak, legs aching to be stretched and moved.. the only problem lay in the fact that I didn't know where to go, what to do, and the weather left little chance to wander outdoors.
Taking a carriage to the clothiers district, the driver let the horses amble at a placid walk down muddied streets, allowing me the chance to pull the heavy curtain back from my window and peer out, browsing the shoppes, both grand and delicate, as we moved past. I sighed; they all looked the same to me, changing only in size and colour, the intricacy of the signs or the displays in the windows. Finally I rapt lightly upon the wall, letting him know to stop; it didn't much matter to me. There was a wedding between the Prince Delaunay and the Princess Azabel; I'd not met either of them, and wasn't entirely positive if I would be attending. Formal functions weren't high on either Quinn nor I's list. Quinn... The mere graze of his name upon my mind was enough to make me smile, even as I ducked my head and hurried into the shoppe, intent on passing idle time with the exercise of browsing through different dresses.

There was a wedding coming up- Prince Delaunay and Princess Azabel, neither of which I'd met at length but I'd seen them at events from time to time and they seemed quite happy together. It meant another dress, which I didn't mind, not really- but I knew that I would need something new in style as well as fact. I had Fydor's attention and he was very sweet- but I was d'Angeline and no fool at all, and I knew that as much as he liked me there would be others in more stunning clothing and with lovelier bodies and faces than I could muster. Still- it couldn't hurt to show I put in some effort.
I walked aisles of brightly colored silks, gowns cut low in the front and back, but I was growing frustrated- I couldn't imagine myself looking like anything but a farce in them. But I was determined and looked over a rack of bright red gowns, refusing to sigh and to see myself differently.

Dresses surrounded me, some glimmering beautifully, some simple, clean cut, hinting at sleek lines rather than boasting them. So engrossed was I that the very fact the quiet click of the door had brought my attention surprised me, though I looked regardlessly for who'd entered. A pretty girl, stood not too far from me, looking rather resolved about something as she studied a rack of cherry dresses. For a moment I watched her, sufficiently distracted from my own browsing, my lower lip caught between my lips; should I speak? In the end, I decided for it, figuring the worst that could happen would to be ignored. "I like the one you just passed, if it helps," I offered, coupling my words with a friendly smile.

The words to my side brought me from my revelry and I turned toward it, wide-eyed. "Oh- thank you," I said with a shy smile and a flush. "I- don't think I even know what I'm really looking for."
She looking familiar and I thought I'd met her at one of the events earlier in the year- perhaps Duke l'Envers wedding? "I think it's a pretty gown as well, I just don't know if it would seem quite as nice on me. You're Joie de Mornay, aren't you?"

Recognition flowed into me as she spoke my name; at once I felt my eyes widen, and the friendly smile widened, becoming more warm. "Duchesse de Mereliot," I said, giving a respectful curtsy, one small enough that it wouldn't look out of place in the store, but deep enough that I hopefully wouldn't offend her - though from what I remembered of her, it wouldn't. "How have you been?"

"Well enough," I replied with a nod, flushing slightly at the curtsy though I kept my expression serene. "Call me Lessa, please. How are you? I'm very happy to see you well. So many people have been sick of late."
A golden fabric with a glittering sheen rested near my hand and I ran a finger across it absently, noting the way it made my skin almost absorb the color. "Are you shopping for Princess Azabel's wedding?"

I nodded as she spoke of sicknesses, my fingers slipping across a finely woven wool dress; much too intricate for me, like most of the dresses here, but that didn't stop me from admiring it anyway. "No... I'm not really shopping for anything," I ceded as she asked about the wedding. "More just a want to get out of the house for the day. I'm not sure if Quinn and I will be able to attend the wedding." A rueful smile, followed by a note of the dress she fingered. "Are you? That dress looks like it would compliment you well," I added, meaning it.

A slight flush crossed my cheeks at her suggestion, in pleasure more than shame- she was right, the color was lovely, but the color was not what had me so overly worried. "Thank you," I told her with a smile. "I will be attending the wedding- and usually I'm moderately good at finding the clothing I need. Of late though I've realized a need to find something a bit more daring- and the idea makes me a bit unnerved. It's such a fine like to walk, to be daring but not so much so that one looks brazen." And looking brazen simply was not an option; Fydor liked my ladylike nature. "I simply want to look less imposing, I think."

I smiled at her, sympathizing. "I know how you feel," I said, my fingers falling away from the pretty, simple dress I was admiring a moment ago. "I think that dress would look wonderful on you," I smiled, hoping I wasn't overstepping my boundaries. "It would offset your hair colour beautifully... Have you ever seen the powders that have a little sparkle to them? It might look well, dusted ever so lightly across your collarbones and the very top of your chest..."
I trailed off; my mouth had run away with me. A de Mornay trait at times, sadly enough, and I bit my lip as I awaited Lessa's reaction, hoping she wouldn't be upset with me for my boldness.

As she spoke I imagined what she spoke of, smiling shyly. "That does sound very pretty," I replied in a soft tone. "But- what of the cut of the gown? I don't want to show too much, but I want to look less- conservative. I'm more used to looking important and regal than looking fun and I was hoping that by changing that I would keep the eye of someone who seems interested in me."
A fresh flush crossed my cheeks, deeper and more lasting this time. "I'm sorry; I don't know why I'm burdening you with all of this."

"I think it would look beautiful on you," I responded with a soft smile, as encouraging as I could be without being boisterous about it. "I don't think you'll have much of a problem keeping his attention as well as your own dignity in a gown like this."
The blush that crossed her cheeks endeared me to her, and I reached out, gently laying my hand upon hers. "I don't mind Lessa, truly - actually, I'd rather help than not."
