The letter lay unopened on the desk in my quarters. I sat on my bed across from it, staring at it. My room was sparsely furnished, just the bed, the armoire, and the desk. We Cassilines did not need much in the way of worldly possessions. Finally, I sighed, rising and walking across the room to pick up the letter. It was from my father, who I hadn't heard from in 15 years. He hadn't been upset at my chosen profession, but once I was gone, that had been it.
I had recently completed my five years of service, and could visit my family if I so chose. I had not given it any thought, but when I'd returned from arms practice today, there was a letter from Eisande. I broke the wax seal easily, then unfolded the missive.
Guy,
You have been gone some long years, but I know that you are now permitted to visit family. Marc and Henri have gone to Tiberium to study, and Dyan and Sophine reside in the City, but Jacques, Marcel, and I would like to see you.
Father
Simple and to the point, father hadn't changed. It was interesting to hear where my siblings were, though I had hardly thought of them during the fifteen years I'd been here. To go or not? There was no real reason not to, it wasn't as if we were on the outs, but then again, then there was no reason to go, either. I wasn't close with my family, always on the outside looking in, but there were no hard feelings between us.
I stood there for some time, thinking. It might be nice to see the family again, and to have some downtime. My last assignment was as bodyguard to a nobleman's daughter, and it had been exhausting. The girl was wild, and I'd ended up feeling more like a babysitter. Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so, and I had been recalled. Finally I made my choice, and sat down to pen a reply.
Father,
I would be happy to come home for a visit. I shall make arrangements and leave as soon as feasible. Looking forward to seeing you, Jacques, and Marcel.

Well, it was time to catch up on what I'd missed.
