"You are more than welcome," I replied with a smile. "Would you like to go and look at the gardens with me?"

"Oh, that sounds lovely." I said, smiling. I seemed to be doing a fair job making friends since coming to the City and it felt nice. I didn't know Sophie well, but so far I liked her.

"So how do you like the capital so far?" I asked her as we followed the directions I had received from the priest to go out into the gardens.

I considered a moment before answering. "Well, at first I was homesick, and everything reminded me one way or another of Kusheth, but since I've started to make friends and learn my way around, I find that I am beginning to think of the City as my home." I smiled as we walked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "I'm even getting to know my sister better, and I really do love my niece and nephew." I made a face, then. "Listen to me go on!" I laughed softly, "I'm not usually so talkative." Which wasn't strictly true, the better I knew someone, the harder it was for them to shut me up.

"No? Well I don't mind," I replied with a smile. "I did ask after all."
We left the halls behind us and entered the gardens, summer flowers blooming all around us joyously.

I chuckled, she had a point there. The gardens were beautiful, and I had to trail my fingers over the petals of a particular bright red rose. "Kusheth has it's own beauty, but so does the City." I commented, pausing to stop and take a whiff of the rose's lovely scent. "I guess I just had to figure that out."

"I've never been to Kuseth, what's it like?" I asked interestedly, pausing as she did to allow her to enjoy.

"It's beautiful." I said with enthusiasm. "I spent most of my time near the sea, and it was really amazing. Long stretches of sand, the pounding surf, the sound of seagulls ... I still miss it sometimes." I smiled as I looked out at the loveliness surrounding us. "However, there is much to enjoy here in the City as well, and I find I am less homesick lately."

"Sounds a lot like Azzalle," I commented with a soft smile, thinking that she sounded like she was settling in better than I was.

"One of these days," I said, when she mentioned Azzalle, "I'd like to go there, it sounds lovely." I laughed ruefully, adding, "Truth be told, there are things I want to see all over the world."

"Yes, I would like to travel as well," I said softly, thinking about the resentment that I still held inside me from not being able to study in Tiberium upon reaching my majority. "Find out how other cultures do things."

"Exactly." I agreed, nodding emphatically. "Don't you find it fascinating that things we take for granted are completely different in other places? I never tire of finding the differences." I realized I was moving my hands quite a bit in my excitement and I blushed slightly. "Sorry, I'm very passionate about this subject."

Her enthusiasm drew me out of the mood that was beginning to develop in my mind, and I smiled.
"Don't apologize, it's refreshing to find someone so eager. Have you travelled much?"

I stuck out my lower lip in a mock pout, then laughed. "Not at all, actually. I left Eisande for Kusheth, and then Kusheth for here, and that's the extent of my travels. Once I reach my majority, I plan to beg and plead until my father caves in and lets me go somewhere." To be honest, at this point, I didn't even care where!

"Perhaps he would agree to you studying in Tiberium," I suggested. "At least that has some academic merit. I always wanted to go myself."

I nodded, I did indeed hope it would be so. "I am hoping he will be receptive to the idea. Two of my brothers have just gone to study there, so mayhap he will agree, seeing as I would be in no danger with Marc and Henri about." I smiled, remembering how wonderful it had been to see them at my natal. "What of you, do you have siblings?"

"Ah, another large family." I said, smiling. "I have six siblings, one sister, and five brothers. I am the youngest, so I think I have spent most of my life underfoot." I made a face, laughing. "And I think most of them still think I am two years old!" I lamented.

I grinned at that. "My sisters have often complained of the same thing. Only my brother is older than me, and being the eldest girl is no easy task either."

"My sister would probably say much the same." I laughed. "She is the eldest girl, with only Jacques being older than she. Actually, she has been more of a mother to me than a sister." It was true, and I suddenly felt a pang of guilt for always giving her such a hard time. I resolved then and there to try to be less of a pain, and more of a help to her.
"Are the rest of your siblings in the City as well?"

"Ah." I said, nodding. "Only Jacques stayed at home, to learn how to run the estate. Everyone else has gone off one way or another." I wondered how father felt about that, everyone leaving, but then, he was the one that had sent us all into fosterage, so I supposed he must not have minded.

I nodded, smiling. "Yes, Dyan married as soon as she was old enough, Guy joined the Cassiline Brotherhood, Marcel, Marc, and Henri were fostered in Namarre and have since gone their separate ways, and I myself haven't been home since I left for Kusheth when I was ten." I ticked off everyone's name on my fingers as I mentioned each person. I chuckled, adding, "Apparently my father didn't want such a full house!"

"What does your mother think of all this?" I inquired, pausing to gently touch the petals of a bright orange daisy.

How to answer that without it becoming awkward? I couldn't think of any, so I simply said, "Oh, she passed away after I was born, which is probably why my father didn't know what to do with all of us children." I smiled as I said it, though I was sad that my mother was gone, I had never known her and it was hard to grieve overmuch for a person you did not remember.

"I'm sorry. I lost my father a few years ago. It was tough on my mother as well," I replied softly, not going into how difficult it was for me and my sisters.

"I'm sorry for your loss." I said, smiling kindly. I really was, even though I had not experienced such loss for myself. I realized with a start that there were very few people in my life for whom I would feel truly saddened by their loss. It was an uncomfortable revelation, and in an attempt to deflect it, I changed the subject. "These flowers are lovely, aren't they?"

"They are. Just as lovely as the ones in Eisheth's sanctuary in Marsilikos," I said, remembering the temple fondly. It was were I would go to find peace after long days at the hospital.
