I chuckled. "Then obviously we are not trying hard enough." I smiled at Sophine, glad I had been able to help her come out of her shell a bit. She seemed so melancholy earlier in the day...thought that might have been due to the bucket of water I had dumped on her. One could never be sure with these sorts of things.

I chuckled at Sandrine's words, something about her made me feel like laughing and that things weren't as serious as I always felt. Part of me wanted to tell her that, but another part was worried she would think I was odd. See, there I was, analyzing everything to death and taking it all too seriously. I seriously needed this lesson in relaxation. "I really can't wait to get home and tell Dyan that I've been here. She can hardly argue with higher education, right?"

"Dyan?" I asked, rolling the linen up and putting it back in my lunch bag.

I made a little face. "Oh, my sister. I'm staying with her and her family here in the City. She likes to keep a close eye on me, but I'm hoping she won't object to me taking classes." Thinking about Dyan's "close eye", I almost flinched outwardly. I had been gone for hours, without telling anyone where I was going. I'd be lucky to be out of the house for weeks after this, much less allowed to take classes!

"The Academy has a very good reputation," I said reassuringly after she looked so worried all of a sudden.

I cast a critical eye at Sophine. How strange. She really needed to relax.
"Yes," I said, "and no one can fault you--us--for wanting to improve ourselves. You can see how fine Fiona has turned out." I smiled at the other woman, watching as she packed up. Then I looked at Sophine, raising my eyebrows. Hopefully she would understand that as a signal that we should think about taking our leave as well.

I sighed and stretched, stifling a yawn. What in the world had possessed me to get up so early. I caught Sandrine's look and I didn't have to think about it. I was ready to head home and take my punishment, whatever that might be.

"Are you both heading out?" I asked, not missing the signals they were sending each other now that I was distracted by my meal.

"We probably should." I said with a grimace. "It was nice to meet you though, and if I decide to take classes, maybe you could show me around?"

"I only take classes part time, but if I'm here, I would be more than happy to," I replied with a friendly smile. "Both you and Sandrine."

I grinned. "It's much appreciated. We must stick out like sore thumbs." Some of us more than others. I was glad no one could see my marque.
I stood up, almost knocking over some awkward student with my chair. "A true pleasure, Fiona."

I rose as well, a bit more carefully. Tucking my hair back, I smiled at Fiona. "Well met, Fiona, and I do hope to see you again, either here or elsewhere."
I was feeling antsy now that I'd realized how late it was getting, and that I was likely going to end up in trouble when I got home. I practically dragged Sandrine out the door of the cafeteria and out into the bright sunlight. "Well, Sandrine, it's been wonderful getting to know you, even if the day did begin with a bucket of water!" I gave her a hug, grinning as I did so. "And don't worry, I'll get your dress back to you, as good as new!"
I took my leave of her, barely giving her a chance to say goodbye. I walked quickly back toward home, rehearsing my excuses for when I arrived. I got there faster than I might have liked and as I opened the front door, I took a deep breath and prepared for the worst.

I watched them go and shook my head, wondering if I would ever see them again. Gathering my lunch bag, I headed to my music lesson.
