I laughed too, knowing how easy it was to get turned around in an unfamiliar place. "True. It's a good thing I have you as I guide."
Walking along, it didn't take long for us to come to the Artist's Guild, and soon we were looking at paintings. "There are certainly a lot of them, aren't there?" I hardly knew where to look first.

“Yes there are,” I agreed, looking around. “Are you looking for a particular style or subject?” there were some paintings that I just didn’t like, but for the most part they are nice. I might find something here as well.

I shook my head. "Nothing in particular. I guess I'll know it when I see it, right?" I began browsing, resisting the urge to touch the paintings. Why did I always feel the need to touch things? I spotted a nice painting of a garden; simple, yet somehow elegant. I pointed it out to Raegan, saying "This one is nice, what do you think?"

I stepped closer, my fingers delicately touching the frame as I studied the painting. “It’s very nice,” I said finally, smiling at Sophine. “It’s quite peaceful and calm.”

"Yes, exactly." I seemed drawn to things that had a sense of calm to them, maybe because it was a quality I didn't seem to share? I didn't want to commit too soon though, so I continued to look at the many paintings. "What about you, do you see anything you like?" I asked Raegan.

I walked around a little, examining a few more pieces before I found one that spoke to me.
“Oh, I like this one,” I said, indicating one that was a dark and stormy seascape. The waves crashed upon a rocky cliff, the moon just barely giving enough light to illuminate the scene through the ragged shreds of clouds. I could almost hear the rush of the sea as if battered the cliff, trying to tear down the rocky barricade that kept it at bay from the lands beyond.

Raegan had impeccable taste. "That's beautiful!" I exclaimed. As were we both from a province near the sea, of course a piece of this nature would evoke certain emotions for us. It was a bit more tempestuous than something I might choose, but I knew a lot of people who loved the sea when it raged. "It reminds me of Kusheth." I remarked. "During the stormy season." For some reason, it seemed to suit her, so I told her as much. "It suits you, I think."

“Does it?” I asked, flushing a little with pleasure at her comment. “It reminds me of Kusheth too. But not in a way that makes me homesick somehow.”

I nodded, I could see what she meant, though I myself was new enough to the City to still be homesick often enough. "It really is quite good. I've always been a bit envious of artists, being able to create such lovely works. Personally, I can barely write legibly, much less paint."
I looked down the row of paintings and spied another view of the sea. This one was a more peaceful vision, a scene that I might have looked upon from my bedroom window in Kusheth. The sky was blue and out to sea you could make out a ship on the horizon. "Oh, and I think I've found the one that is perfect for me!" I exclaimed, pointing it out.

I laughed happily as she found her painting. “Oh, that does suit you. And it’s calm and reminiscent of Kusheth. It’s lovely, Sophine,” I said, smiling.

"Well, that was fast. Apparently I'm not hard to please." I laughed and gestured back at the painting Raegan had pointed out. "And you, are you set on that one? Or should we continue browsing?" I was in no hurry to get back to my sister, so I didn't mind continuing to look, even if my heart was already set on something.

I glanced back at the one I’d found and knew it was what I wanted. “I’m rather set on that one. We can keep looking if you want, or we could even go get something to drink at a café,” I suggested.

"It seems we are both easy to please," I said with a smile. It appeared we had more in common than being from Kusheth. "I'd love to get a drink, that sounds wonderful." I liked that idea a lot, as all this shopping was a bit wearing. "Is there somewhere you can recommend?" I paused, then added, "oh, and I suppose we should pay for out paintings. I don't suppose they're giving them away." I chuckled softly, looking around for a clerk much the way I had when we were buying our statues.

“I think they might prefer we paid,” I agreed, chuckling.
I glanced around as well and then a young woman came over to see if we needed help. I pointed out the painting I wanted, asked the price, bartered just a little and then handed over the coins and arranged for delivery.
“As for where to go, I know there are few taverns and inns nearby, but if we want a tea shoppe or café we may have to walk a bit,” I told Sophine.

I paid for my purchase and arranged delivery, then turned back to Raegan. "I don't mind either way, but a tavern would be fine." More than fine, I'd never actually been to a tavern before, so the idea held the thrill of the unknown. I was beginning to realize that coming to the City might not be the awful bore I had expected; my sister might annoy me, but living with her afforded me a freedom I hadn't known before. "Lead the way. Again." I laughed. "It appears you've become a tour guide."

“As long as we stick to the few areas I’m familiar with then we’re safe,” I said, chuckling.
“I’m rather more in the mood for a drink than a walk, so how about one of the closer taverns?” I suggested as we began to head out.

I nodded in agreement. "I could use a drink as well, so close is good." I grimaced, "Not to mention these are new shoes, and they're killing me." I lifted one foot to illustrate my new boots, a gift from Dyan. "I'm not quite used to them yet." As we were leaving the shop, I looked up and down the street. "Which way to drinks?" I grinned.

I glanced left and then right before finally deciding.
"This way," I said, turning. "The Laughing Parrot is down this way and I think that will be a fun place for you to visit."

"The Laughing Parrot?" I said, following her direction. "That's an interesting name. It sounds lively." At least, I hoped it was. I'd never been to a tavern, and while this wasn't Night's Doorstep it still promised to be an intriguing experience. "Have you been there often?"

“Only once. It’s frequented by a lot of performers and is always a rather lively place from what I’ve heard,” I said, smiling.
