It had been far too long since I had seen Owen. He and his parents used to visit quite often when we were children, but then we had grown up. I had heard that he was in town through my mother, so I sent him a letter, inviting him over for dinner.

Juliettes letter both surprised and pleased me when I'd received it. I'd not known she was in the City, otherwise I'd have surely looked her up before now; she had always held a secure spot as one of my favorite family members.
Dressed smartly in black breeches and a cobalt shirt, I exited my carriage and took the steps to her home two at a time. In my right hand was a bundle of flowers for her, and as I knocked on the door, I waited expectantly before being admitted into a receiving room to wait.

One of the new maids, the one I had trouble remembering her name, came and told me that Owen was here. I thanked her with a smile, took off my apron, and made a side trip to the powder room to change my gloves to ones not splattered with the makings of dinner.
"Owen, how good to see you again," I said with a wide smile when I caught sight of him.

A noise made me turn, and I was greeted with Juliettes smiling face, a sight I'd not realized how much I'd missed until now. "Cousin," I said, grinning broadly at her as I crossed the remaining distance between us. Without hesitation I leaned and caught her up, hugging her gently, before presenting her with the array of wildflowers I'd brought with me. "These are for you, Sunshine. It's so nice to see you again."

I hugged him back, and then laughed as he presented the flowers. "That's so sweet, thank you," I said with wide smile as I took the bouquet. "How are you? It's been so long."

"I've been very good, actually," I said, smiling wide at her as she took the flowers from me. "Mother is constantly pushing me to marry, but alas! I cannot find a girl who can keep up."
I grinned at her through my jest before speaking again. "And how about you, Juliette? How have you been of late?"

"Do you know that old curse 'May you live in interesting times'?" I asked with a wry smile. "It was a bit like that for a time. But I think I've escaped most of it now."
With a little shake of my head, I cleared it from my mind. "But come, sit. We have a few minutes until dinner is ready, would you care for a drink?"

I looked at her curiously, but before I could ask she switched the course of conversation and I went with it smoothly. I'd ask again later, and see if she was truly alright. "Of course," I said, smiling warmly at my cousin. "Are you still downing those fruity drinks?" I asked, teasing blatantly.

I stuck my tongue out at him and then grinned. "I was thinking more along the lines of a Montegue merlot actually," I replied, going over to the side table to lay the flowers carefully down and to pour two glasses of wine. I returned and handed him a glass.

"Oh, very nice," I said, grinning all the more for the way she stuck her tongue out at me. Taking the glass from her hand, I held it aloft just slightly. "To family, and to happiness," I said, proposing a toast as I smiled down at her.

"To family and happiness," I replied with a matching smile, touching the rim of my glass to his lightly.

Our glasses dinged softly as we toasted, and, still smiling, I took a drink of my wine to complete it. "What's for dinner tonight?" I asked pleasantly after we'd lowered our glasses again, my eyes on hers.

"Ham and potatoes," I said with a smile after swallowing my wine. "Hope you're hungry, I made lots."

"When am I ever not hungry?" I grinned at her as I stood, absent mindedly swirling the wine in my glass. "Do I have to remind you of the time that one of the servants boys at your families estate and I had a mutton eating contest?" My grin broadened all the more as I puffed my chest out, recalling how I'd not only won, but had been sick for two days after. I still couldn't stomach mutton, to think about it.

I laughed. "That was quite the sight. I have no idea how either of you ate that much. It was almost obscene," I said with a teasing smile.

"Me either," I said, chuckling. "And how much trouble we both got into for eating it - how were we supposed to know it was supposed to be dinner? I figured your family always had a lot of mutton laying around."
I flashed her a teasing look before raising my glass, taking another drink of the fine wine. Juliette truly did have wonderful taste in drinks.

I laughed at that. "We do wine, not sheep. Didn't you learn anything?" I said with a grin.
