I never should have taken this job.
The dingy tavern smelled of sex and feces. The dirty owner grinned at me with yellow, broken teeth. "You'll mind the horses," he said in a gravelly voice. "Now get to it, the stable needs mucking out."
I entered the dark stable, bearing a torch. I could hardly make anything out, but I could hear distressed whinnying coming from the back. Hastily, I made my way there. The mare. a huge brown beast, was rearing and tossing, her flanks cut and oozing. Poor thing. Carefully, I unlatched her door.
That was when she lost it. Rearing up, she kicked me back. I hit the wall so hard the wind was knocked out of me, and the torch knocked from my grip. The hay immediately ignited. The last thing I remember were the hooves trampling my skull.
