The carriage swayed slowly as we turned the corner into the drive, my head pressed to the side of the cab as I contemplated the day. It had been strange, all and all... I felt strange and I felt an almost itch begin to permeate my skin as we came to a halt.
“Shall I prepare an afternoon tea?” Elenore said some what absently, my mind thinking of different things. There were a multitude of things that I was thinking of, a multitude of feelings. Scared, excited, and unsure of the future, unsure about who I should choose for the father of my child.
“Sidonie?” The voice of Elenore cut through my thoughts and I turned to her.
“What?” I asked looking at her and sitting up straight. The look on her face was half wanting to chide me for not paying attention, half understanding of my introspective nature.
“Do you want tea?” She asked again, smiling softly to me.
“Oh...yes...” I said at length, nodding a little before glancing to the foot man who opened the door. I didn't move, my body feeling strange and heavy. I glanced to Elenore, who glanced to me then stepped past me and out the door.
“Coming?” She asked looking to me. I smiled softly and nodded, languidly stepping from the carriage. Elenore muttered about something and hurried ahead of me, talking about tea's and time's and proper etiquette. Either way I wasn't listening as I took small, slow steps, looking down at my feet as I walked.
I hadn't made it far when I heard it.
Sidonie.
Just a whisper, just a word, my name spoken with unfamiliar voices. One word spoken in many voices, both male and female. I turned my head, glancing over my shoulder as if a person was at my gate, calling for me.
But there was no one there, nothing. Nothing but a gust of wind that whipped my hair and my skirts. I slowly glanced around me, the carriage having pulled away and Elenore in the house I was alone as I stood in the courtyard. My glances went all around finally fixing on the sky, wrinkling my nose as the weather changed from warm to cool. The once intermittently sunny skies were turning cloudy quickly and the shots of sun and sky darkened to blackness.
The wind whipped harder, my delicately pinned hair became loose and caught in my lashes as the sound of the soft sounds of thunder rumbled in the distance.
“What is it.” I whispered, as if speaking to some unseen force...or perhaps I was. The wind whipped harder and harder, the only light left in the sky was blinked out by the blackness that ensued.
What is it?
It was like a moment in time, everything I had been thinking, all the feelings I had been feeling, like a shot in the dark, a flash and I stared in front of me. There was a bolt of lightening, a clap in the sky as a brilliant light flashed behind my eyes, and only moments after a boom. A thunder so loud it sounded as if it was in my own head, and with it a single name.
Tabien.
I gasped.
It took me a moment to contemplate what I had heard and by the time I had the cool rain began to fall, beating down on me with utter realization.
In that moment I knew what I had to do, I knew where I had to be, and though I couldn't understand why, or what for, I just knew.
My feet began to move before I had even really let the information sink in. I walked first, and then ran, one hand holding the skirt of my gown as my slippered feet began to pound against the road of my drive way and down the road toward Tabien's house.
