The Dowayne, Donatien nó Cereus was looking over some papers when one of his older adepts walked in. "Excuse me, but there are some people here to see you." The Dowayne looked up to see two obviously poor people enter the room. He frowned, but he would hear out their story.
The man bowed in respect and told the Dowayne the entire truth. He knew that the houses would not take just anyone, but he figured they would know something was unusual about the boy anyhow. He spoke of finding the sick child and how he managed to recover from an unknown ailment. He mentioned the boy was shy, but he was attractive and never gave any troubles. The kid had a fondness for animals, especially those of a smaller variety. When the man was done the Dowayne did feel a little moved. If anything the man was a talented story teller.
The female of the couple walked to the door of the room to usher in the kid. The guardians didn't want the Dowayne to judge the child without first knowing his background. Caine walked in, head down, his bright blue eyes quickly looking around and taking the place in. He was a small and fragile child, but there was an obvious inner strength. Though the story about the child seemed to fantastic, Donatien could imagine this child in such a situation.
He walked up to the boy and put a finger under the boy's chin, gently lifting his face so he could get a good look. He truly was a beautiful child and there was no doubt that he would attract some interest when he came of age. Since confidence was something taught by the House on a daily basis the Dowayne decided to take a chance on the child.
Caine stayed that day. With no real possessions there was nothing to move. The parents said a tearful goodbye and left. Leaving the boy feeling alone again and very unsure. The Dowayne put him in a room with some of the other boys, making sure they understood that the new kid was to be a friend and not someone to tease. And so a new rank was added to the house of Cereus, one that had required a lot of refinement, but also one who showed care toward the House, the only true parent he felt he had.
