A part of me wondered if he liked me more than as a friend, but as soon as the thought came, I brushed it away. LaValle was sweet by nature, something I've always liked about him. No doubt it was him reassuring me, nothing else. I smiled at him, my fingers twining with his, and knowing that if we didn't change the subject soon we would be exchanging gentle words til I had to leave. But... A part of me didn't mind that. Not at all. I just didn't want to bore him, or make him feel obligated.
"You're sweeter than anyone else I know, LaValle," I said, smiling softly at him. I glanced at the figure again, then back at him. "Now I wish I hadn't asked about gardening, but instead of hiding away in Mont Nuit." My tone was teasing, though I meant it.

The blush was never going to leave my cheeks at this rate, and I didn't mind at all so long as it came from her showing her sweetness. "Perhaps you simply bring out the kindness in me, for many find me boring and plain," I said softly, then smiled shyly and with a hint of giddy eagerness as I continued. "And it's always possible to change the subject, though I don't know how much help I could be. Perhaps you should teach me about such a topic instead."

I squeezed his hand softly, liking how his skin felt against mine and subtly trying to gain more. "I'm not sure what I could teach about," I said, thinking, before looking back at LaValle with a smile. "Normally I go to others for it."

"You've already taught me a great deal, simply through our conversations," I assured her, squeezing her hand softly back and stroking her wrist with my fingers.

I blushed, smiling softly at him. "I don't see how I could have taught you anything," I said, trying to think back on our previous conversations.

"You taught me a great deal, whether you realize it or not," I assured her with a smile. "The bit more confidence I show now if nothing else. Sometimes I think no one really understands me, but I can see that you do- or at least you are willing to try when few others are."

"Of course I am," I replied immediately, my smile growing as I looked at him. "You're tender and sweet, and a great friend to have. I count myself lucky."

A deep blush, almost as deep as my joy at hearing she thought so, crossed my face as I smiled and squeezed her hand gently. "I will have to make sure I live up to that standard then," I whispered, peeking at her from under my hair.

My hand twitched a little as I restrained it; it wanted to brush his hair back, but I knew we would be caught and seperated if we weren't careful. "I don't doubt you will," I whispered back with a slightly shy smile that brightened. My gaze went to the earth by the plants and I plucked out a slender stalk, obviously not what was planted here.

She was already much easier about doing this than I was, and I smiled to see it. "Good choice- that would grow into a thistle," I told her softly. "They'll completely overtake a garden, but they can also have some lovely purple flowers."

"Horses like to eat them, though," I said absently, a piece of information from my early childhood rising to mind. "The flowers are sweet," I added a little softer, though my absentness was gone as I looked up at him with a slightly shy smile.

"Yes- which is my point entirely on weeds," I told her with an understanding smile. "To the garden, they're useless and dangerous- but to others, they're beautiful."

I nodded, smiling a little. "I understand what you mean," I said, looking up at him from under my lashes. "At least if you clear them, they'll not choke out other plants."

"I suppose so," I acceded softly but with a smile. "Most people would imagine a perfect world as one with perfect people; mine is only where everything lives as side by side as their nature allows and gardens grow freely without shaping or weeding."

I smiled softly, admiring the way he sat in the dirt, as the sun played off his hair. "You're one of a kind, LaValle," I said softly.

"Thankfully for most people that's nearly true," I replied with a laugh, the warm sun and scents of flowers and grass comforting me.

I wrinkled my nose a little at him, though I was glad to see him laughing. "That's very true," I said, my tone teasing. "I couldn't imagine what the world would do if there was more sweetness in it."

"Sweetness, but also shyness," I reminded her lightly. "We'd all enjoy helping but be too afraid in most cases to do so."
