Name: Jaiden Liatris, Duchesse D’Neige, the Sovereign Duchy of Camlach
Age: 35
Race: D’Angeline
Gender: Female
Appearance: Jaiden is whippet thin, all hard angles and muscle; her hands are covered in sword and bow calluses and nicks. Her skin is a pale gold and she is crowned with a mane of golden blond hair, largely neglected and its rough appearance reflects this. She is of medium height and has sharp features. She is not beautiful. But she is arresting, something about her draws a second look. Her eyes are the black of midnight skies. A latticework of scars covers her from the base of her neck to her ankles.
History: Jaiden is the only child of Eddard Liatris and his consort Tatiana nó Liatris. The Duc’s second wife died many years before with no issue, and he refrained from marrying Tatiana in the hopes of making a more politically advantageous match one day. Tatiana, a decade younger than Eddard, was taken in by his father,Damon Liatris, after her family was slaughtered by the Skaldi on the orders of Isidore D’Aglimort. She was three. Shortly after D’Aglimort’s death, Damon was given the Duchy of Camlach for his loyalty and service to the Queen. Eddard ignored Tatiana most of the time, even though the little girl adored him. When his second wife died in childbirth, Tatiana simply stepped into her place. Eddard said nothing, merely accepted it. He was not a man of many words or feelings.
Jaiden has been Eddard’s only living issue. As the child of his consort, she is legally his heir, though it is a rocky footing. As she grew, it became obvious that no other children were coming, and as Jaiden’s looks were not promising any beauty, Eddard took it upon himself to raise her as he himself had been raised: by sword and shield, by spear and bow. Tatiana made little protest; she wanted her daughter able to defend herself and her people. But even with her martial training and expertise, it could not save her.
During her 17th winter, the household was traveling south to their winter manor when they were attacked. Skaldic raiders, desperate and half starved, fell upon them like wolves. Everyone who was not killed was taken as a slave. Jaiden survived. Her parents did not.
Ten months later, just as a new Sovereign Duc was to be named, Jaiden returned. She was almost feral, half starved, showed signs of repeated beatings, possibly rapes. She never spoke of it, except to say that those who killed her family walk no more. The Duchy was still hers, and darkness has lived in her since.
She has ruled well, and mostly fair. Her fervor for combat is unparalleled, and most her men-at-arms fear her skill with any weapon created. She has not married, or produced an heir; most of her servants speculate that she has never let anyone touch her since her return. They are only partially right.
Content to live in her snowy domain, Jaiden has never ventured far from northern Camlach. But a summons to the City of Elua has changed everything. Pray the City survives her.
