I had only just arrived in the City, and the first place I had decided to visit was the Sanctuary of Camael, to give thanks for the safe journey, for my father's ascent to sovereign duc, and to say a prayer for more personal reasons.
As we drove up to the Sanctuary in the Temple District, it was all I could do to not openly stare. This was the biggest temple to Camael I had ever seen, and it made such an impression. A tough grey exterior, with creeping vines up the sides, and subtle hints of the warrior within; sharper edges, cold stone floors, and the clouds of smoke from the incense that was lit.
I was met at the opening archway by Camael's priestess; in a dark green surplice, with sword at her side, she cut an impressive figure. "Welcome, lady of Camlach. Seek your answers wisely." She spoke in a soft, yet hard tone of voice, as I removed my shoes, and my small sword, eager to feel the stone floor upon my feet.
As I walked past into the inner courtyard, where the statue of Camael was, I pulled out a stick of dragon's blood incense, my offering at his alter. I knelt in front of his statue, and felt an icy sort of peace. I began to pray under my breath. "Oh Camael, thank you for such a god-sent journey. Thank you, for your blessing of fortune upon my family, that we may fulfill and serve your lands and your purpose to the best of our abilities.” Here, I paused. "May the former Duchesse and her soul rest in peace, for her former holdings will be in good hands.” I added.
Taking a deep breath, I continued on. "Please allow me the patience and the skill to hold myself well in this strange place, this Court of many. I want to serve you well.” I gazed upon his fierce face, the sword in his hand, and could hear the beat of war drums pounding in my ears. A small smile, determined and resolved, settle upon my face. "I will not fail you.” I lit my incense, placed it on the small alter in front of the statue, and with a new feeling of purpose in my heart, walked out and back to my carriage, giving a respectful nod to the priestess, as she gave me a small smile.
