Name: Celestine Clavel nó Eglantine
Born as: Sayyida Khalidah bint Jibril al-Zarifa al-Clavel
Age: 23
Race: D’Angeline/Akkadian
Former Eglantine Adept
Appearance: Doll-like is how she looks. Her frame is slender, but well muscled and covered in soft golden skin. She is barely 5’4” and most mistake her for a child based on her stature, until they see the rounded hips and full breasts. Her face is fairly unremarkable, with clean, solemn lines and soft features. But her eyes, almond shaped and slightly up tilted dominate her face. They are the color of aquamarines, inherited from her father’s line. Her hair is dark and falls in long spirals to her waist.
History: Celestine Clavel was born Sayyida (Lady) Khalidah bint Jibril al-Zarifa (Graceful one) al-Clavel on the sands of Khebbel-im-Akkad. Her father, Gabriel Clavel, heir to the Comte Darien Clavel of Nammare, was a noble in service to Duc Barquiel L’Envers. Sent to serve the son of Valerie L’Envers at the Khalif’s court, Gabriel proved himself a loyal and capable diplomat. The old Mushir (Duke) of the Tamir Province, Abu Sa’id Yusuf ibn Jibril al-Sabbah, was very impressed with the young Gabriel and befriended him. During a hunting expedition, Gabriel saved Abu Sa’id’s life from a rampaging hippo and as a reward, was given the hand of Sayyida Nasreen bint Yusuf al-Sabbah, the duke’s only daughter, in marriage.
When Barquiel died, and his son showed no interest in maintaining Gabriel’s services, he moved his wife and twin sons, Da’ud and Malik, to Tamir, and pledged his oath of loyalty to the old Mushir, and later his son. Having spent most of his adult life in Khebbel im Akkad, Gabriel felt it only appropriate to adopt an Akkadian name. He took the name Sayyid (Lord) Jibril ibn Darien al-Walid (the reborn) al-Sabbah. He served his father-in-law as an interpreter, avoided fighting his former countrymen, and did all in his power to encourage peace. When Nasreen bore Khalidah, her father paid her scant mind. He was far too busy training his twin sons in the ways of both the Akkadian warrior and D’Angeline nobleman She would only be useful to him as a marriage pawn, and that much later.
Nasreen loved her solemn little daughter and lavished attention and love on her. She was the darling of the seraglio. And she was taught Raqs Sharqi, the art of dance by her mother, a skilled performer. For many years Khalidah lived happily in the company of women and eunuchs, ignored by her father and brothers, immersed in the world of dancing. As signs of war with Terre d’Ange grew, so did Nasreen’s belly. As war broke out, she died giving birth to a still born, malformed daughter. Abu Da’ud (honorific, meaning father of Da’ud) Jibril was rocked with grief. To compound it, news reached Jibril that his own father had passed away, and that he was now Comte Gabriel Clavel. Clavel marshaled his sons and tore his daughter from the sheltered world of the seraglio and headed for home.stripped of her mother and her home, the final blow was the loss of her name. Khalidah was no more, and Celestine Clavel was born.
Khalidah was lost in Terre d’Ange. At thirteen, she had no idea how to react in this harsh alien world her father had plunged her into. She knew nothing of D’Angeline ways and culture. In Nammare at her father’s seat, she spent much time in her rooms, barely spoke, and even then, only in Akkadian. Her D’Angeline was broken at best. Her only solace was dancing.
Gabriel was disgusted with his daughter’s lack of refinement and D’Angeline ways and could barely tolerate her. Coupled with the fact that she was the ghost of his dead wife, he indentured her to Eglantine. Her nature was far more suited to Alyssum, but he cared not. He wanted her exposed to D’Angeline life, all of it, as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. What better place than at Eglantine, where she would be thrust center stage time and again.
Painfully Khalidah has learned. The years have been hard for her, and she is still painfully modest and quiet. Her mark is barely ¾’s done, while many adepts far younger than her have already completed theirs. Two things keep her going at Eglantine, she has escaped from under her father’s thumb, and she is free to dance.
The story so far:
After the events leading up to and causing the death of her eldest brother and her father, Khalidah has taken over the title as Comtesse Clavel, as per Michael Clavel's wishes. She has lived in the family town home since leaving Eglantine, but has not strayed far from it's protective walls. Enough is enough. She has spent the time reading, trying to educate and familiarize herself with the running of her estates, and trying to find her courage.
