I took a bite of the beef and made much the same sound Merav had. “I agree, this is delicious.”

I cut a piece of salmon off and put it on his plate. "Here, try it."

“Thank you,” I said, placing a piece of one of the wine soaked tubers on her plate. “I am so glad to be here with you.”

My cheeks pinked slightly. "I am glad too," I said. "I was so worried when you wrote that you were ill." I speared the tuber and ate it. "Mmm, this is good too."

“I was fortunate to have family close to take care of me. My sister especially spent a lot of time nursing me back to health.” I took a bite of one of the tubers. “And yes, this is delicious.” Smiling, I began to eat with more focus, my stomach complaining that it was still too empty.

"You have a sister?" I asked inquisitively between bites. "Is she older or younger?"

“Younger, by about five minutes,” I said with a grin between bites.

"A twin!" I said, taking a sip of my wine. "What's her name? Does she look like you?"

“Her name is Talitha. She’s sweet and enchanting, and we look a bit alike but mostly it’s the eyes, hers are as blue as mine,” I answered, smiling.

"Sweet and enchanting must run in the family also," I said, smiling. I couldn't believe my own overtness. I looked hastily at my plate, taking another bite of salmon.

“Thank you,” I said, smiling at her compliment. I focused on my food again, giving her a moment to do so as well.

We ate in comfortable silence for a bit, enjoying our respective meals. After a while, I asked, "Is all your family in the city, then?"

“They are, though it’s just my parents and my sister. I like having them close enough to visit,” I said, leaning back and taking a drink of wine. The food was so good, but after the sickness it took a lot less to fill me up than it had before.

"That's nice, to have your family, close," I said. "My mother told me that my father has a sister here, but I have never met her."

“Have you looked for her?” I asked after another sip of wine.

"I hardly know where to begin," I said. "There must be hundreds of women named Ruth in the Yeshuite quarter."

“True, but how many of them would have a brother with your father’s name and any of the other particular’s you could use to find her? I’m sure that if you did want to look for her you would have success if even after awhile,” I suggested, smiling.

"That's true," I agreed. "I've been nervous to start looking, to tell you the truth, because I'm afraid that once I find them, they will reject me because my mother is D'Angeline."

“That might be true with some Yeshuites, but I have found the ones here more accepting than many I have heard about. They are living in the heart of d’Angeline society after all, they can’t be completely opposed to it,” I replied.

"I hope you are right," I said hopefully. "For if I do find them, they may hold the key to finally finding my father." My face brightened at the thought, and I took a few more bites of my food.

“I wish you luck and let me know if there’s any way I can help.” I took another bite of tuber, but then pushed my plate away; I was well and truly full.

"Thank you," I said, as I finished off my potatoes. There was still quite a bit of fish left on my plate, and I thought Zahav might want it. "I think I'm going to take the rest home," I said. "There's enough here for a whole other meal."

“That’s a good idea,” I said, nodding. “I’d take the rest of mine, but I know I’m too full to eat any more tonight and I’ve nothing to keep it fresh.”
I made a gesture to the server who nodded in indication he’d be with us in a moment.

"The ice-vendor came up the street today; I can keep the food on that," I said. It hadn't fully dawned on me that I needed to keep the food fresh, but once it had, I realized that I might just invite Darien to my house tonight. The thought was thrilling.

Thank the gods I thought about what she was saying before I responded. I smiled and said, “I would like that very much, thank you.”

I exhaled silently. "I'm glad," I said.
The waiter came over and I said, "Can we have the leftovers wrapped up, please?"
"Certainly, madam," he replied.

The server took out plates away to wrap up our food.
“I’ve had such a good time, this has been a great night,” I told her, smiling.

"I have too," I said, smiling. Outside, the sun was just beginning to set and I said, "It looks like we'll be able to catch the sunset on our walk back."
