“I like sweets…but not if they have a lot of fruit. There’s a place that sells candied fruit covered in chocolate and it has never appealed to me,” I said, smiling.

"Really?" I asked with a rising grin. "I love those, but I don't like chocolate with nuts in it." The thought made me shudder lightly. "Or anything with nuts in it, actually, sweet or no."

“Oh, I love nuts,” I said. “I can eat them all the time.”
I made a teasing face. “How ever are we going to make this relationship work?”

"I like nuts," I said, wrinkling my nose at him in a teasing grin. "I just don't like them in sweets, salads, or anything else. Just plain."
I was grinning at him when the server returned, setting our plates before us with a cheery smile of her own. Giving my thanks, I watched her walk away again, my eyes going over my food and Augusts. "Mmm," I said, spearing a cooked spinach leaf and holding it aloft a few inches. "Far better than your pork."

I made a face and held up my fork in a playfully defensive posture. “Keep that vile green away from me,” I said, chuckling.

I waggled my fork a little with a grin before eating the spinach, honestly enjoying the flavor it gave. "I don't think I've ever met a man who would openly eat spinach," I said with a teasing grin.

“That because we know better,” I said, chuckling and beginning to slice a bite of pork.

I merely shook my head at him as I ate another bite, amusement writ across my features. Swallowing, I lifted my glass and took a sip before I was ready to talk again. "Call it what you will," I said, giving him a sweetly teasing grin again.

“Sense is what I call it,” I said after I swallowed a bite of pork, smiling at her. “You should have picked the pork, it’s delicious.”

My smile broadened. "I'm glad you like it," I said brightly as I gathered another forkful of food. "There's so much here that I don't think I'll be even able to eat half of it."

“You should eat as much as you can, keep your strength up,” I said, smiling at her. My eyes wandered over the parts of her I could see above the table. She was still stunningly beautiful, but still thinner than she had been before the illness.

The look on my face softened as he spoke, his words constructed of nothing but care. Sweet Elua, I loved him. "I'll do my best," I said with a happy smile, my fork posed to deliver another bite. "I've been feeling fine lately, really. I just seem to get winded easier than I did before, but that's more of a nuisance than anything else."

“I’m glad to hear that, though I will be happiest when you are fully recovered,” I said, smiling at her.

"As will I," I said with an affectionate smile. "The healer said that I might not ever be as healthy as I was, but it shouldn't stop me from anything. Including bearing children," I added, a blush coming to my face as my smile grew. "He said it - I didn't ask."

My fork stopped halfway to my mouth and dropped down to the plate again. “Oh gods Miri,” I said, struck by the fact that she would never be completely well again. “I…we… I mean we don’t have to have children, I won’t risk you for anything.”

"Oh, no," I said instantly, my smile sliding from my face as I shook my head. "It's not certain I won't make a full recovery, nothing is ever certain. There's just the chance... and I would never pass the chance to have your child August," I said, swallowing against the rising tide of emotion in me, against the tears that already wanted to build. "Nothing would be more important to me than to be your wife, and to have our baby," I said softly.

“As long as I have you, I will be happy,” I said, reaching over and squeezing her hand.

I squeezed his hand back, my smile tentatively returning. "I know," I whispered softly, then added a little louder, "And that's why I love you so much, August."

I couldn’t help but smile as I was once again filled with a sense of rightness and optimism at our future together. “That’s the only reason?” I teased, hoping to lighten the mood again.

"Currently," I shot back without pause, a teasing smile flashing on my mouth before I even took the time to think about it. I squeezed his hand again and let go to eat more, knowing he'd want it and I did need it. "How is your father doing? Still on the mend?"

“He is, though very slowly. He sleeps a lot, but the healers say he needs it,” I answered between bites. “I told him I was going out to lunch with you and he told me to send you his love.”

My smile grew to a borderline grin when August finished speaking. "I love your parents, both of them," I said with a happy smile. "They've always been nothing but kind and supportive to me. I can see why my parents enjoyed their friendship with yours so much."
I took another bite of my lunch though I was quickly growing full. I was blessed, for not only was my love my best friend, but I had nothing to worry about with fitting into his family. The only one who troubled me was Sabriel, but I had yet to see or hear from him in quite a while; I hoped he had cooled since the last time August and he had met.

“He did,” I said, nodding and putting my fork down as the pork was gone now, it had been delicious. “He keeps it in a drawer by his bed where he can read it again when the mood strikes him.” I chuckled and gave her a teasing smile. “I think he’s almost as in love with you as I am.”

I laughed, setting my fork down on my plate - I was done, and rather proud. There was little more than half left on my plate, but that means I'd eaten more in one setting than I had since before I caught ill.
"I see where his son gets his taste from then," I teased back, though I was warmed by the thought that my letter meant something to his father. "I blame it on growing up with you - somehow I must have picked up on all the wiley Trevalion ways," I said playfully.
I took a sip of my glass and then put it back down. "How was your pork?"

"Better than your pork I'll wager," I teased with a grin. Had we not been in public, I'd have thrown my napkin at him, but as it was I merely grinned at him. "Are you ready to go, then? I can't wait to be alone with you."

It seemed with August my smile never left my face. He made me so incredibly happy that I couldn't believe it sometimes, of the luck I had in marrying him. I turned as the server came to use and curtsied as she gave August the check, head tilted down respectfully.
