The sun had barely risen as I made my way to Leyna's home. I had awoken early so I could get my gift here and not be noticed coming or going; I was already nervous about what I was doing and didn't know if being questioned about it would cause me to turn tail and run. Many adepts went their entire servitudes without giving a patron gift, and here I was leaving one for the first- and only- patron I'd had. Still, I knew it was the right thing to do; every part of my being told me so, especially after I found out about the King and what had brought her to Alyssum.
Once I reached her front door I stopped a few steps before it and looked around at her home; surely she was sleeping within, and I prayed for her dreams to be peaceful. Before the door I left my gift, a bouquet of rich purple irises, set gently down so the glass iris in the center, masterfully and perfectly made, would not break or chip. It had taken a third of the patron-gift I had been left, along with the other money I'd saved, but I knew it was still a bargain, especially since it was for her. Atop it I lay a card with her name elegantly written across it; on the back it said Keep Smiling. My name was nowhere on it.
Looking about I could see that I had not been noticed. Smiling shyly to myself I turned and walked away down the path I had come, hoping she remembered and would come to see me soon.

The morning after my visit to the palace broke with a soft beauty that drew me gently awake. I stretched and slipped from my bed. Shylah opened her eyes but then drifted back to sleep. I smiled and wrapped myself in a robe before going downstairs.
There was a quiet bustle in the house as the daily routine was begun. Anne smiled as I entered the kitchen.
"Those were outside when I went to get milk this morning," she said, pointing to a bouquet of irises on the table. "Your name is on the card."
My eyes widened at their beauty and I went to inspect them. A wide smile spread across my face as I read the card. There was no signature, but I knew they were from LaValle. I leaned in to look closer and noticed something different about one of the blooms. I gasped softly as I realized the center blossom was not crafted by nature but by man. I gently traced the edge of the flower with my fingertip, careful not to chance damaging the exquisite creation.
"That may be one of the prettiest things I've ever seen," said Anne, still across the room.
All I could do was beam with happiness and delicately draw the glass flower from it's nest. "Would you put these in water for me?", I asked Anne. "And tell Devan I will be wanting the carriage as soon as I have broken my fast."
She nodded, a happy smile curving her lips. I cradled the iris as I returned to my room. I laid it on a table where the light from the window caused it to shimmer and glow. I giggled excitedly and stripped off my clothes, my mind raced as I tried to decide what to wear for my visit to Alyssum.
