I stood on the balcony outside my room, watching the birds and insects going about their business. There were so many creatures that were just going about their days, never knowing what was unfolding in the world at large. It made me feel somehow comforted and ready to return to the Palace.
I dressed in a dark grey, not quite black dress, and braided my hair into a single rope down my back. The only jewelry I donned was my medallion. Anne smiled faintly as she gave me her approval. She had taken the news as hard and hadn't really spoken much. I had told her she could go to be with her family, but she insisted I needed her here. I think she just wanted to work.
I gave her a hug before heading out. Devan stood by my carriage. I knew better than to even suggest that he didn't need to come. I was just lucky that he didn't feel the need to stand outside the door of whatever room I was in.
"My lady," he said as he helped me into the carriage. Shylah joined me, of course. She had been less than subtle in her companionship. I nodded to Devan and he closed the door.
I drew a deep breath and let it out slowly as the carriage began to move. I felt stronger and more able to be of whatever help I could at the Palace, but it would still be difficult to go back.
