Gods, it'd seemed like ages since I'd last been here, but in truth it'd only been a few short weeks. I barely waited for the carriage to stop before I opened the door and sprang out myself, the door to the Moray townhome only half a heartbeat behind my own in opening.
"My lady!" gasped the maid, a grin splitting her face. "By the lords, it's good to see you again. Is everything well? How'd you get into the City?" I laughed and hugged her, walking inside as my luggage was unloaded. "They couldn't bear to turn away a healer, or near enough to one anyway," I responded with a smile as I set my bag of medicinal bag down. "Is Jess here?"
"No, my lady, she is not but..." She paused, unsure how to continue. My heart stopped dead - gods, was she alright?? Did she catch the sickness, something happened to her? Gods, I never should have left, never should have... "Lord du Paras has stopped by," the maid said of a sudden, her eyes turning a little nervously to me. "He's come quite often, infact, once a day for quite a while now."
My jaw dropped, and I stared at her for a moment, slowly comprehending what she was saying. "Quinn's come by?" She nodded, and I swallowed. "Did he say what he wanted?"
She shook her head. "No, he has only come by asking for you, wondering if you've returned yet." I gasped softly, couldn't help it. I felt hope surge in my chest even as I tried to beat it back down again. I couldn't bear to be wrong. After a moment, I nodded. "Is Jess well?" The maid nodded, but before she could say anything I plunged ahead. "I must go to Quinns, to see if he is alright."
I glanced down in dismay at my travel weary clothing, dusty still from the road. I refused to let him see me as such, not after all that had happened. "I'm going to go change. Could you ask and see if they could saddle my mare for me?"
She nodded, and my room was reached quickly enough. I began stripping out of my gown before I even opened the door, undoing the row of pale buttons and exchanging it for a cobalt blue dress. I made my way back down and took up my medicinal bag, as I walked out the door, pleased to see my mare waiting. Strapping my bag behind it, I mounted and rode off, heading in a direction I knew well.
