Geraldine had come by to make an appointment to have more of her marque done, she’d just had an assignation with a foreign patron she said. She wasn’t feeling well, so we made the appointment for a couple weeks off and then spent some time chatting. She had to return for a class so we’d parted and I’d given her wishes of speedy recovery.
Now, days later, it seemed as if I had contracted whatever it was she had. It had started with nausea and a fever and gone spiraling down from there. I’d put a notice of closure on my front window and isolated myself in my apartment. For the most part anyway, for mother had a key and she came to check on me. After her first visit, when she’d informed me of the plague taking root in the City, she’d brought a healer who confirmed her fears.
I didn’t know much of what passed after that, except that there were points I wished for death as an escape from the fever, coughing, and vomiting. Then the rash appeared and I took on the appearance of a strawberry left to rot in the sun. Which was considerably better than how I felt.
After a period though, my stomach calmed at least and I could hold down food without it wanting out before it hit my stomach. I also became aware enough to realize it was Talitha sitting by my bed and feeding me. She looked even more beautiful than the last time I’d seen her and tears of gratitude filled my eyes that my twin was well.
She smiled her enchanting smile and assured me that I was going to be alright now. I knew she was telling the truth, we were unable to lie to each other, so it was with hope now that I looked to the future.
