I’d gone to see Joie a couple days after Beltane. I still didn’t understand what had happened, but I knew being apart wasn’t the answer. I had to see her.
But that was impossible. I was told she’d left the City and had left me no word of where she’d gone or when – or if – she was returning. My blood ran cold in my veins and I was as oblivious during that walk home as I was returning home on Beltane.
I stood in the doorway to my bedroom, looking at the arrangements I hadn’t been able to clear yet and it made my heart turn icy as well.
So be it. If she was willing to run from me for a single misunderstanding, then her words couldn’t have been true and what I’d thought I felt for her was a lie. All the emotions she’d brought forth in me withered so quickly I could actually feel it. Deciding what I had to do, I moved forward with single-minded purpose.
I packed my things, not everything but everything I needed for awhile. I was going home, my real home.
As I continued to pack I called for one of my men. I told him to ready my horse and gave him instructions for what to do what I was gone. Everything in the romantic pile on the floor was to be burned, along with my Beltane outfit. Everything in this house that had anything to do with Joie was to be disposed of as well, when I returned I wanted nothing here to remind me of her.
Preparations taken care of, I mounted my horse and headed for Siovale.
