I stood in front of my wardrobe, mulling over which new dress to choose. I wanted to have an outfit ready, but with so many options, it was near impossible. I made a mental note to thank Alain again for his generosity, before snatching the red ball gown and laying it out on the bed. A good thing I had picked this one, it was my favorite of all the ones comissioned.
Rummaging in a drawer, I withdrew a pair of red leather slippers and laid them at the foot of the bed. Heading for my vanity, I peered into my jewel box before selecting a necklace of ruby and pearl and teardrop ruby earrings. The entire ensemble I moved to my chair. It was perfect. Longest Night would be perfect. I couldn't wait.

I knew that Avive was very excited about the Longest Night celebrations, so I was willing to make an extra effort to insure her first City fete was special. It was customary for members of a household to wear complimentary if not matching outfits, so I went to find out what she was wearing before I made my own choice.
Knocking on the door to her room, I said, "Avive, it's Alain. I have a question about Longest Night."

Eagerly I hurried to the door and opened it. "Come in," I said, moving aside so he could step in. "What's the matter?"

"Nothing's the matter," I told her, smiling. "I just came to see if you'd decided what you are wearing. I am trying not to clash terribly and make us look a sight."

I grinned widely. "Come see." I led him to where I had laid out my ensemble: red gown, slippers and jewels. "What do you think? The adept at Eglantine said this gown was a good one to debut in, and since this is my first formal fete, I think it's appropriate."

"You will look stunning," I said, smiling.
She really would, the color would be beautiful on her. I was glad I had come to see what she was wearing, since prior to this I had been leaning towards a green outfit. Now, I would wear my dark grey doeskin breeches, a white linen shirt and the dark grey long vest with the red trim and embroidery. We would look very nice together.
"I have just the outfit to compliment yours," I told her. "Though I am certain once you arrive no one will care a thing about what I am wearing."

"Thank you," I said, blushing a bit. "What are you wearing? Can I see? I have to make sure you won't clash with Cybane either."

I laughed. "You can if you'd like, though it's nothing so stunning as your outfit."

"I would like," I said with a grin, stepping out of the room.

With a smile, I led her down to my room. Opening my wardrobe, I found the pieces and laid them out on there bed for her to look at.
"What do you think?" I asked.

"They're perfect!" I said happily. "We'll be the handsomest family there."

"We will indeed," I said, chuckling.
Going to my dresser, I opened the box in which I kept my jewelry. With only a little searching, I found a small silver drop earring with a ruby at the end.
"And this for a little glitz," I said, holding up the earring to show her.

"I didn't know you wore an earring," I said, surprised. "It's lovely."

"Usually just something small," I said, pulling back my hair so she could see the small gold hoop there now. "Put I have some nicer pieces for dressier occasions."
I places the earring back in the box and began returning the clothes to my wardrobe.
"I'm not even sure how I ended up with the hole in my ear in the first place," I told her, laughing. "I was in Marsilikos, had too much to drink one night, and woke up with a hoop in my ear."

I laughed at that. "It makes you look very dashing, like a pirate king," I said.

"Why thank you," I said, bowing slightly after returning the last item to my wardrobe and shutting the doors.

I perched on the edge of the bed. "What are our plans for Longest Night, anyway?"

"I figured we'd start at the Palace fete and depending on how things go possibly end the night at one of the more private parties being thrown," I told her.

"Jessamine de Mornay is throwing a fete and I thought we might want to make an appearance there as well," I answered.

I nodded. "Are you acquainted withthe baroness? What is she like?"

I let out a peal of laughter, bouncing slightly on the soft mattress. "It will be so wonderful, Alain. I can't imagine anything could go wrong."

"Careful," I warned, grinning. "The gods love to respond to statements such as that."
I went over and ruffled her hair.
"Time for me to go meet with the horse broker," I told her. "See you at dinner?"

"All right," I said, absently smoothing my hair back into place and rising from where I sat. "I'll see you at dinner," I said sing-songily. "I love you."

"I love you too," I told her, chuckling.
Going to my coffer, I unlocked it and drew out a large purse. I was fairly certain the deal would close today and I wanted to make sure to have the funds on hand.
Whistling to myself, I went to see a man about some horses.
