The walk home was unending and yet when I realized I was standing outside my gate I was surprised to be here already.
I was still confused about what exactly had happened. I knew what Joie had said, and my reaction while obviously not the smoothest had been honest. I’d been surprised, and yet somehow I’d hurt her. I was haunted by the look in her eyes in the garden and by the way she’d fled from me.
I pushed open the gate and trudged up the walkway. The entire situation was so illogical that I couldn’t even begin to know how to start examining it. Once inside the house I started to head for my bedroom, but stopped short. I’d been expecting to bring Joie here tonight and had spent hours earlier arranging my room with that in mind. A bed of thick pillows and blankets under the glass, a bottle of rare and expensive liquor, chocolates and other sweets, and everything covered in a dusting of rose petals.
My chest clenched so hard I couldn’t breathe and had to put my hand against the wall for a moment. I couldn’t go in there.
Stripping off my shirt and boots, I left them in a pile by the door and then made my way up to the library. I found an empty spot on the floor near a wall and sat, resting my head against the cool wood of the wall and searching vainly for answers.
