I rose as well. "All right."
We entered the library and I went to the sideboard to pour Alain a glass of brandy. I loved this feeling, that I was living together with somebody, and that we were taking care of one another. It was the kind of feeling I hoped to find with a husband.

Sitting in one of the new chairs, I sighed happily.
"This room really did turn out lovely, Avive," I told her again as I looked around.

"I'm glad you like it," I said, bringing him his glass. "It's for you, after all."
I walked to the shelf and pulled out my Tanach, then settled in the other chair. "Where were we in the story?" I asked.

Swirling the brandy in the glass, I thought for a moment. "I don't recall," I told her, chuckling. "I believe I fell asleep last time."

"No matter," I said, flipping through the book. "There are lots of stories in here." I spied the verse I had left off at.
"Here we are," I said. "Now Moishe was keeping the flock of Yitro his father in law, and the angel of Adonai appeared unto him..."

I took a sip of brandy, slowly swallowing the rich liquid as I listened to her read. This was so nice, I was glad she had come. It felt so much more like a home since she'd come. It was good to have family near.

"But Moishe said unto Adonai, why have you chosen me? I am slow of speech and slow of tongue."
This was so wonderful, this peace in our house. Our house. I smiled to myself and continued reading.

After another sip of brandy, I set the glass aside. I stretched out my legs and crossed them at the ankles, relaxed and content as I listened to her.

When I reached the end of the chapter, I closed the book quietly. "To be continued..." I said suspensefully.

I chuckled softly. "Such a tease," I said, smiling.

Tease. Dominic had called me that. The word jarred me hard, and the book slipped from my fingers onto the floor. "Ah!" I exclaimed. "Sorry..." I knelt down and picked up the book, clutching it hard.
"It's a long book," I said, attempting to keep cool. "We've hardly come to the climax of it yet."

I sat up when she dropped the book.
"What's wrong?" I asked. "I was just joking. I didn't mean to upset you."

"It's nothing," I said quickly. "Sorry, I'm just clumsy sometimes." My heart was beating so fast in my chest I thought it would fly out of my body. If he knew, he would kill Dominic, and then he would be a murderer. It really was nothing, just a bad memory. I wondered how long I could convince myself of this.

"I don't believe you, but if you don't want to tell me then that's your right," I said, leaning back in my chair.

Relieved, I sat silently, my heartbeat returning to normal. "Thank you," I said. "It's late, we should go to sleep."

"You can go ahead," I told her. "I've still got a few things to take care of."

Rising from my chair, I went to him to kiss him on his cheek. "Good night," I said. "See you in the morning."

"Good night," I said, smiling and reaching up to ruffle her hair.

I blushed, smoothing my hair back into place, before heading up to bed.

I watched her as she left the room, smiling to myself. After a moment, I rose and, taking my brandy with me, returned to my office to spend another couple hours looking over bloodlines before I went to bed myself.
