During my trip home, I wondered what it was that had possessed me. No, I didn't like the Shahrizai, but I had been ready to kill Dominic for nothing more than talking to Avive. The pressure of working all the time must be getting to me. Or at least that was the excuse I would use if someone brought it up. I didn't want to face the thought that I had reacted so much like my father would have, knowing that my choice was right for someone else and enforcing my will upon them.
Home again, I went upstairs and knocked on Avive's door, rather sure she would still be awake.
"Avive, it's Alain," I said.

I was lying in bed with a candle and a book, trying to get my mind off of things, when I heard the knock on the door and Alain's voice. Too tired to get up, I called, "Come in, cousin."

I went to the foot of her bed and looked at her for a moment before I spoke.
"I'm sorry for my reactions, and I've changed my mind. You are free to see Dominic and whoever else you wish. As much as I want to protect you, you need to learn about the world on your own," I told her.

I blinked at him, too stunned for a moment to respond. Putting a ribbon in my place, I closed it and clambered out from under the covers to sit next to him.
"Alain, I..." I stopped. "Thank you."
I cocked my head at him. "What happened when you went to see him?"

"Many things, but mostly I realized that you need to learn about things for yourself. I have warned you about Dominic and his whole family, so now it's up to you," I said plainly.

"I understand," I said. "I will be careful."

Nodding, I reached out and ruffled her hair, then turned to leave. I stopped halfway to the door and looked back at her.
"I told Dominic that I would kill him if he hurt you, and I mean that sincerely. I thought that you should know that," I told her, then left, closing the door behind me.

I stared silently after him, digesting his words. Resigned to this decision, I opened my book again. Nobody would die if I could help it.
