“Reckless fool,” I said in remonstrance as I crossed my arms on my chest. If the gesture made my breasts bob up a little, I only realized it much later – the frown and the posture were both natural. “Don’t go risking your life like that. No mail is that important, and one day I’ll be short a friend.”
I couldn’t help but wonder what in the world would compel the Dowayne of Orchis to risk one of his top adepts on a kamikaze mission to Marsilikos. Either Larq was embellishing, by much, or something terribly odd was going on.

"Reckless, and I thought you were the one to take gambles." I ran a step ahead of her, turning around. "See, not a scratch, nothin'. I'm quite alright." I was amazed how frightened she looked, I'd expected more of a awe'd look.
"In any case, I made it there, and sure enough delivered it to the recipient. And I was allowed onto his ship. Now apparently, since the ship had docked, no one other than the crew had been let on it. They were strictly stationed to resupply, and for some reason, they weren't questioned. But I found out what made them so special." I popped my head up, looking around for any evesdroppers."
"They were pirates. I said with a wink."

I laughed. "Illyrian pirates, right, Larq?" I said in tease. "Docked over in Marsilikos, taking tea with the Lady's guards, and you were taking them, urgently, the recipe for the scones that would seal the deal."
I teased him, though there was no ill will. After last night, it was nice to allow myself some reprieve from the heavy decisions I had to make.

I scoffed at her. "Seriously. They were pirates. They had gold, and treasure, and maps with points out." Perhaps it was an exaggeration. What they actually had were lots of chests, closed, and under blankets. It was true they had maps, but that could be anything. "I never knew what the message was, but when I delivered to the captain, he read it silently, and then gave me a handful initially what I though were gold ducats. However," I reached to my neck, and removed one coin struck through, and hung like a necklace. "As you can see, it looks like an inscription and gold I've never seen before." The coin had that of a large bird on one side, and a point shaped building on the other with maybe was the sun.

I moved instinctively to look more closely at the necklace. In the morning sun it gleamed, and the symbols were familiar, though I would have to look back in my library for exact explanations.
"Kabbalah," I said, tease all gone. "I'd like a chance to examine it with my books, once if you'd like."

"Hmm, well, that might be a bit trickly. You'll have to find a way to have me at your knee seeing as it hasn't left my neck in almost a year now. I'm quite fond it if you ask me, I believe it's a fitting good luck charm myself." I shrugged sheepishly. Apparently, she no more comment about the pirate thing herself. Nothing like a flash gold to distract her. Oh, the thought just made me giggle.

“And they say Bryony adepts are greedy,” I said with a snort. Nevertheless, I understood – the horseshoe pendant at my neck was a present from Troy, and even if I hadn’t seen him in a long time, I never removed it. I liked to think it warded off bad luck, seeing as he’d never got caught after his sneak into Bryony.
“Suit yourself,” I said with a shrug. “If you’re not curious enough to know what brand you’ve been carrying around your neck, it’s not my problem.” With that, I started walking again towards the Cockeral – we were almost there, and I had a Fete to be ready for.
Of course it was, but I preferred to use reverse psychology.

I just grinned. "So, is this how you nab all of your patrons, promising them a critique of their prowess and luxury, and taunt them to they submit to your ever whim," I said affectionately. "I bet it is."
I took a step ahead, and opened the door for her as we arrived at the Cockerel. "Ah, I'm sure you'll find a way to hold me down at some point to get a look at it." I shrugged.
