The morning of the Royal Hunt Fete I'd been fumbling in my things, getting ready for the night's event, and in my urgency, a splash of perfume had resounded in my room. I cursed for it - there was no other bottle, and I needed to have that on for the evening. Reese, I knew, would be man enough to appreciate it. Unpleased with my own clumsiness, I praised the day for being young still, and skulked out of Bryony. I had to run to Renfermer le Parfum, and get myself something to replace it. Thankfully, lily essence wasn't too hard to come by, or too expensive. Decidedly, I made my way down the hill, off to the perfume shop.

For all the joy I usually get out of the work of a curiour, nothing is quite so annoying as being awoken ere dawn to deliver a love note to a minor ladie. Yes, I suppose as one of Naamah's servents, I should be more enthusiastic, but damn it all if I don't like my sleep.
And to top it all off, the horse broke the stay line, and ran off. Needless to say, the trudge back up mount nuit was well...too much work for such an early part of the day.

I was well halfway on the trek down the mount when I heard some neighing, and what could only be a curse to follow. I furrowed my brow – it was too light for the brigands of the doorstep to be taking advantage of travelers or of unwise peers. No – must be an isolated incident, I decided.
And so I continued down, knowing full well I’d likely be there before they even opened, sighing at the thought of waiting in front of the door.

The dew was still settling on the roads as I made my way back up. It seemed I spotted my mare no merely toying with me. At some point I found myself annoyed enough to make a mock protest, seating myself on the ground, hoping that the dumb animal my take pity on me.
Yes, I could walk up, but my pride was at stake as well.

My walk was continuing, and I noted on the curb a sitting form, and not so far, a horse that seemed…. Smug? That was a novelty, and it made me smile, forgetting the stench of too much perfume that was clinging to my skirts.
As I closed the distance, the shape became more precise, and I wondered who it was who… could it be? I had to look at him again, and not wanting to be wrong and expose myself to ridicule, I merely cleared my throat. All I needed was a glimpse of his face. The thought made me smile. It had been too long.

Apperently in my quest to seek obedience from the mule of a horse, I only just barely caught a figure from the corner of the eye.
"I know what your thinking, a young man like me, down on his luck. But I assure you, justice will me mine." I said in mock fervor before letting out a playful laugh.

His laughter was infectious… and just too familiar. “Perhaps if you’d kept the clover I gave you on your thirteenth natal, Lady Fortuna would look on your more favorably, you dunce,” I replied with a merry tease, all my bad humor evaporating for the sheer joy of meeting an old fried.
Elua, it had been a long time. To think yesterday I was just making plans to look him up with Nyx ! Really, I had the luck of a Bryony. I wondered if it would stay with me once… I shoved the ill-boding thought away.

"Yeah, well if I were....." I caught myself mid sentence, jerking my head sharply, peering up into deep emerald eyes, and a whimsical smile that brought back memories. My own widened.
"Shona!" was all I blurted out, before leaping, and forgetting I was seated, merely hugging her legs.

I think I hadn’t laughed as much, and as wholeheartedly in years for the look of surprise on his face… until he proceeded to hug my legs (oblivious Larq!) and toppled me on the street. I was still laughing when my body fell, and I hit my elbow lightly, thinking gratefully that my sleeves were long, for once, and that my shawl likely had cushioned the fall. No bruises tonight ! I was wearing an open gown.
“It’s good to see you,” I said as I sat up, my hand caressing his hair a moment. “And it’s a wonder you haven’t passed out from all that Naamah-forsaken perfume!” Gods – he’d put his face right in that spot – I hadn’t bothered changing when I headed out.

"Well, of course I'm.." I caught an inhale of what I must have now guessed was said perfume, and a cough escaped me as I rolled away before getting up, and offering my hand to help her up.
"What in Elua is that potent odor?"

I took his hand and stood up with graceful ease, wiping my skirts a little. “Essence of lily,” I replied matter of factly. “Wonderful in small quantities, lethal by the mouthful… and incidently my reason for being out so early.” I smiled, giving him the kiss of greeting, then wincing at the taste of perfume on his lips.
“What’s yours? Have your travels given you the early-bird sickness now?” I asked, grinning wide.

"If it were up to me, I'd still be getting my beauty sleep," I said with a grin. "But some lout of a lord had to have his love note delivered by dawn, and am of course the best looking courier in the city, I really had no choice did I?" My exagerations were perhaps still gaudy, but never the less than hysterical.
"And it seems you caught me in midst of protest of that rather ornery animal," pointing to the mare, now obviously prancing at me.

“She looks smug,” I replied with a grin, amused by his antics. “Maybe you’re not going at it the right way.” With a little wink, I took a few tentative steps towards the mare, making cooing sounds. If I’d had a carrot on hand, it would have been better, but I didn’t, and so I approached her gently, trying to coax her into better behavior.
My parents had a farm, I visited – I wasn’t a horse master, but I knew enough to get around the beasts, and soon enough, the animal deigned come closer, and I patter her neck softly. “There there,” I said sweetly. “What’s her name?” I asked casually.

"Moria, I believe. I use a couple different horses, depending on whats available." I responded, pride only slightly hurt by her success.
"So, how have you been," I blurted out, unable to find any other subtle way to say it. Obviously, she wouldn't be able to answer everything in a sentence, but...

"Moria, that's cute," I replied, cooing to the horse. I patted her, and handed the reign over to Larquel with a little grin. "I've been well, Larq. Busy. Argued over. Tired. Confused." I sighed. If this kept up, I'd end up giving him the whole dictionary as an answer.
"It's been a long time, we would need a longer moment to chat it up. How have you been?" I asked in return, my smile a little more tender for my happiness to see him again. It was good to know he was back - friends were always welcome, and I hoped he wouldn't shun me for the choice I was about to make, maybe, possibly, probably, surely... gods this was complicated. If anyone was a loyal friend, it was him. I had trust in that.

"Well, do you want the short answer, or the one that comes with a complementary morning drink?" I asked her. If she said short answer, and tried to be on her way, I'd be half tempted to uproot her myself, and carry her to the nearest tavern. I could do it to, not easily, but I could. I started chuckling to myself at the thought of her kicking in futility as I carried her down the mountain.

“How about the one that comes with the complimentary perfume sniff?” I asked with an amused grin. “I don’t have that much time, I have a lot to get ready for, and an errand to run…” I moved a little, daring him to stop me.
Larquel’s bubbliness made me smile inwardly, though I tried to keep a straight face. If anything, it was a good diversion from last night’s painful discussions.

"Time, shime. I haven't seen a childhood friend in years, and your trying to give me little more than the time of day," I said incrediously. "I may play the fool, but I am no fool." My sheepish grin could make even a harsh statement like that put someone at ease.

“No fool indeed, little brother,” I replied, kissing his cheek with a loud smack. “Of course I’ll go with you, poor little heart broken Larquel,” I added, teasing him as my arms went around his neck affectionately. In his ear, I whispered, “Do you have any idea how much I missed you, you dunce?”

I rubbed her head affectionatly, "Oh, I bet I could make a safe wager on it." I said with a wink, and playing to her Brony fancy. I gave her a quick embrace, and then turned around, offering my arm.
"Since you've been here longer, and since your on the scheduel it's only fair you choose the destination.[/i]

“Alright, but what about Moria?” I asked with a lifted eyebrow. “Won’t she resent being abandoned?” I gave him a little wink. “Perhaps the lads a the Cockeral will make her forget it…”
I linked arms in his, though. Had he grown? He seemed a little more bulky than last time I’d seen him, in truth. Gods, but it was good to see him again – especially since I was mayhap making difficult decision… finding him again … it was a present from Lady Fortuna, perhaps, to ease my aching heart.

"Bah, that horse could have gone back anytime she wanted. She just loves to torment me." I patted her arm gently. "Forget her, I'll take the blame if anything happens. Now, the Cockeral you said, that sounds like an awfully good idea to me.
Shona was....well, I'm not quite sure how to describe it. Safe to say she was easily worth her Marquee, and then some.

“Your House, your decisions,” I replied with a careless shrug. I was having my share of trouble at Bryony, I couldn’t take responsibility for Larq’s antics on top of it.
“Then take me along, sweets, and tell me a million stories, won’t you?” I said, trying to keep my voice merry. I didn’t want to start off with my own burden just yet – besides, I needed to digest it.

"Stories. You want stories." I made a mock sigh as we made our way down further. "You do know I charge for the services now, don't you?" I said incredulously. I didn't really mean it, but I did my best to lighten the mood.

“I also know to squirrel good rebates,” I replied with a warm grin. For all the weight on my shoulders, I was glad to see him, still. “And I know that…” I brushed my hand “accidentally” against his arm, “you would enjoy telling me your tales, Larq. Unless you’ve lost your taste for the spotlight?” I asked with an arched eyebrow.

"Spotlight, of course not. My fear is that you've had more than enough experiences to have my light seem a little...well dim, as I see it." I responded. In my mind, the phrase, you little flirt, you seemed to spring from no where. Adepts are incredibly quick to pick up on something. For now, I clasped my hands behind my back, though I turned to her as we walked, head tilted. "Though, I think I can manage something..."

As Larquel moved to removed his offered arm and put them behind his back, I let my own drop to the side, then crossed them on my breast. Was it flaunting my shape? Perhaps. But in truth, it didn’t matter. It was the expression of just a bit of irritation for his response to my little tease. What? I had the plague, now? No matter. It didn’t really import to me all that much.
“Then enlighten me, fisherman,” I replied with a taunting smirk. Fisherman. Because he’d just fished for a compliment after dismissing my playful flirt.

My eyes darted just a moment. "Alright, alright. I suppose I won't win this war of attrition. Stories, stories, what stories might I tell you." I had a good amount, but telling just one doesn't showcase one's skills. It must be calculated and fitting to the mood.
"Fishermen...." I said with a grin. "Now that you bring it up, I had an interesting journey to Marsilikos during my time away. "It all started when I had to deliver a small sealed letter to a captain docked in Marsilikos. It was an urgent message, so I was sent alone, with horses waiting at checkpoints."

"Alone?" I startled, looking at him curious. Eiseth's Way wasn't the most dangerous road, but most parties travelled with men-at-arms. "No protection, my reckless friend?"

"Yeah. It was top priority mail," I said with a wink. "I couldn't be delayed by gathering any escorts, so I took off alone. Admittedly I was underprotected, but I was alone, and I don't mind saying I'm a pretty swift rider when I need to be," I said, puffing out my chest a bit. I held up my hands displaying the number. "I was there in under a week, far under."
