I made my way back to my house, jaw clenched to the point it made my teeth ache. I found Marshall and informed him of the plans, instructing him to prepare for the long journey. He nodded, questions written across his features, but he did not ask. I found Bonne and told her the situation and assured her I would be back and wanted to keep all of the staff on while I was away. I also told her I had some correspondence I would need delivered. Then I went to my study to write. Cendrillon,
I am afraid I will have to delay our drink. I must return to Siovale and oversee the funerals for the Duc d'Siovale and his family.
I look forward to having that drink upon my return to the City.
Regards, Alain
Dear Allisande,
I have to beg your forgiveness and delay the riding lessons. I must return to Siovale. The Duc was married to my cousin and I am to escort the bodies home and over see their proper burial.
I am leaving word that you are to be allowed to visit Lenore whenever you wish while I am away and you are to be afford all courtesies while here. She will appreciate any visits you can manage as there will be very few people or other horses here. I will make sure the treat box is full and in its customary place.
I look forward to your lessons as soon as I return to the City, and again beg your forgiveness for the delay.
Regretfully, Alain
I sealed the letters and gave them to Bonne to arrange immediate delivery. Then I climbed the stairs to pack, we would be leaving at first light.
