I wonder what the average peer does during their day. I do have a pretty good idea however that it does not involved being perched on one's roof, in nothing but breeches, sweating, and trying to balance ceramic tiles and a very smell glue.
"Tabien! Your going to get yourself killed up there. Why don't you hire some city lads to do that for you?" A concerned voice said from the balcony. I looked up.
"I'm well aware of the danger Rene, I'm fine. Besides, we don't exaclty have the assets to afford more help. It's my Elua's grace that I have your help." She merely giggled back at me. "Now could you do me a favor and find that last stack of ceramic plates."
"Didn't you know, that's the last one, you're all out." She responded.
"Elua's Balls! Are you serious." This was just great, this glue would harden by the end of the day, attached to the roof or not. This leak was becoming a real pain. I grabbed my rope I was using as a harnessed, and lowered myself to the balcony.
"Rene....where are my shirts?" I called out.
"I'm washing them right now, silly."
"What in Kushiel's name am I supposed to wear into town then?" A lose fitting vest was flung at me from the door way. It hit me in the face, and fell into my arms.
"I don't think you'll be sequestered by any temptresses or villains Tabien. Just speak softly, and grunt a little, and you fit in with the local populace." She teased. Only because she was a child hood friend beyond my house maid could she say things without fear of respite. At best, I chuckled, and threw it on, finding some boots, and donning those as well. I almost grabbed my sword belt, but thought it might be encumbering for now, so just grabbed my dagger and booth sheathe.
"Thanks for your consideration. I'll be back anon, barring any seductions or roberies. Just have my shirts done."
"Yes masterI heard with mock respect as I exited the house, heading for the stables.
Once into town, I found the merchant, and paid quietly for the materials. It ended up being more than Furion could carry with me also, so I found myself toting one bag on my own back, why he carried three on his.
"Not how I wanted to spend my day." I grumbled, hauling the weight somewhat undressed through the streets of the city.

I had just arrived in the City, and my party and I were making our way through to the palace where we would hopefully find lodging. We had assurances of our welcome, if we could but find it...
"You know, if we had followed the directions of the City guards, we probably would be there by now." I commented to Marcelo, who was supposed to be my guide. My tone was observational, but he was still embarrased enough to flush. He started to stutter his excuses - apparently there had been a short cut - but he stopped when Maria shook her head.
"Excuse me sir," I called out to a man passing, switching to D'Angeline. "But would you be able to direct us to the palace?"

I was a bit day dreaming, entranced by the movements of people, and the weight gave me a bit of tunnel vision to my task. But still, I shook my head and looked up at the question.
An Aragonian flair if I ever saw it. There's nostalgia. I felt very conscious of my lack of clothing, but did my best to summon my resolve. She'd probably just pass me off as a commoner, and think nothing more of it.
"Um, yes...let's see...you'll want to find the main road, that leads directly to the palace. That would be..." I must not have been paying to much attention where I had gone during my shopping.

Another who didn't know his way around the City. Perfect. I reined in and waited with a patient smile as he puzzled it out.

"Ah, that's right, it should be that way." Nothing like subverting a mild panic attack of embarrassment, I pointed out the direction faithfully. "Just walk that way until you reach the main road in the city, and it leads straight to the Palace."
Turning back to the pair, I made a bit of a judgment. "Your of foreign peerage, aren't you?" I asked inquisitively.

"We are from Aragonia, yes." I replied with a polite little smile. "Thank you sir, for your aid."
I turned and spoke quickly to Marcelo. He could be of use, and help this man with his burden home as thanks. He swung down, leading his mount over to the commoner and offered to take a bag.

I hid a smile as she made quick banter. My Aragonian was rusty, but I'd tried to keep up on it. I was quite surprised when she offered her help.
"My lady, I don't think mere directions warrant a reciprocation, I'm sure you and your entourage are very busy." I stated.

"I am more than happy to sir." Marcelo might not have had a sense for direction, but he learned quickly. "I did get the princesa lost in the first place."
I smiled. "It's quite alright sir, Marcelo will join us at the palace. Thank you again for your help."

I stared for moment. "Princesa?" I stammered. If I felt awkward before, the feeling was compounded ten fold now. I lowered the sack off my shoulders and gave a short bow, still aware that we were in public.
"Your Highness, I was not aware. Please forgive my rudeness." I said humbly.

"My name?" I asked curiously. "Tabien de Valclesa your highness."

"A pleasure Tabien. You speak Aragonian, don't you?" I asked. My mare began to shuffle impatiently underneath me, and I laid a calming hand on her neck.

I responded in said language. It was a little choppy, but I'd used it half my life, so you don't quite forget it. "How did you guess?" I asked.
I got the distinct feeling that we looked a bit odd in the middle of the road, but I put the thought out of my mind for the moment.

"Understanding shows on a face, Tabien." I explained in D'Angeline. "Thank you for feeding my curiosity. But I shan't inconvenience you any longer. You doubtless have things that need tiling." I smiled.

I did my best to give a solemn quick bow. "Well, thank you very much your highness."
I hoisted one of the sacks back up, and indicated another to be helped.
"I'm merely returning to my townhouse, so I shouldn't keep your friend long," I said as I made my way into the streets.

I smiled, and we headed in the opposite direction. Back to the main road and up to the palace. I could feel the excitement building ever further in my stomach. I was looking forward to see old family and friends.

As much as I hated to admit it, I was grateful for Marcelo's help. In short order we made it back to my ville. On the way back, we talked of inconsequential things, mostly in Aragonian, for it was easier for him, and it gave me practice.
"There you are, I finished your clothes. Who is that?" Rene asked from the door as we walked up.
"This is Marcelo, he was...kind enough to help me with my load on the way back."
"Oh" she said teasingly. "are we treating your cute friend for dinner then?" I raised an eyebrow, and Marcelo merely blushed.
"No, I don't think so Rene, his mistress probably needs him at the palace." I said, giving a nudge to Marcelo. I whispered in his ear. "Though if you felt compelled to visit, your more than welcome. I'm sure Rene wouldn't mind."
It was probably nothing, but I was not a fool to be unaware of something spontaneous and innocent. I gave Marcelo a pat on the back, and sent him off with thanks. Who knows, maybe crosses with royalty are good things. For now, it was back to sweat and toil for one in slightly lesser predicaments.
