It was becoming warmer outside and I'd decided that the aerie here needed some new birds- with as long as it had been since someone occupied the townhouse a few of the older birds had died and some which had been young were getting too old to use. Besides, I'd always liked choosing my own birds- it was very personal and I needed some light enough to fly alone should I choose.
The market at Mont Nuit really did carry almost everything and soon I found a collection of booths dedicated to hunting animals, feathered and furred; dogs, the rare hunting cat, and all sorts of hawks and falcons as well as their gear. Smiling to myself I began to look around, gently stroking wings and chests to see how tame the gyrfalcons were.

Longest Night had been most profitable, and I was feeling jolly with the extra coins lining my pockets. The statement from my man of business resting in my possession was proof of how well I had done.
For being winter, the day was shaping up to be rather fine, and I felt like slumming a little in Mount Nuit after my appointment, rather than going home. So I indulged one of my guilty pleasures. The falconers in the market had some of the most beautifully bred birds for sale, and I liked to admire them. In my youth I'd been passionate about hawking, until women and dicing entered my life. But still, on occasion, I liked to add a new bird to the mewes at home.
Walking the stalls, my attention was drawn from the birds to a mane of fiery hair, and the slender hand stroking wings as she passed. Ah! How Lucky I found redheads!
"The gray and black stripped at the end of the row has an excellent lineage, milady."

My head turned at the voice and I smiled slightly, nodding in agreement placidly as I looked at him through cool blue-grey eyes- at least that was the color they'd been this morning in contrast to the violet-grey shade of my gown. "Thank you, my lord, but I'm looking for a hunter on this day," I replied softly but surely. "Bred and hand raised birds, in my opinion, make poor chasers, as they know the food will always be there for them at the end of the day."
He was a handsome enough man and not completely condescending as of yet- besides, there was a familiar cast to his features that reminded me of something from my learning at my mother's knee. A family name...which one?

"Hmm, then I don't think you'll have much luck. Not many of the falconers have wild birds right now, and the few that are available are all heavier hawks, if it's a gyrfalcon you're looking for." I stroked the crest of the bird in question, admiring the patterns of his wings.
"I'll admit I'm surprised, most ladies do not deign to hunt, and I'd place money that you are one of the few who do."

"I enjoy spending time with the birds and hunting is what they do," I replied simply. "Though if it's too early for wild eyases I'm afraid it's songbirds for me, or some other interesting pet. What of you- a hunter yourself?"

"Oh, a long time ago, in my feckless youth. Now it's just a well kept secret hobby of mine. If you want an interesting pet, a raven or an owl make good ones. Ravens are smarter than crows, and less likely to steal your shiny trinkets. " I remembered fondly the raven I had found as a boy and raised. Shortly after discovering girls I let the wily bird go, though I still saw him around for a few years.

"I was more thinking of songbirds, but clever ones," I replied after a moment's thought where I considered his idea. "A raven would be lovely, but they are mischevious and prone to making trouble from what I understand. My time is limited and it seems unfair to buy a pet and simply subvert its nature by keeping it in a cage due to my lack of attention."

I raised my eyebrows in surprise, "Surly a woman as lovely as yourself has some willing participant or another to free up your time for a little attentiveness to a pet? It seems tragic, that a beauty and kind heart such as yours toil day in and day out." I said it with a laughing smile, meaning to tease only a little, not in seriousness.

Smiling sincerely I nodded, then raised a brow. "I have much work, but I suppose I could find the time if I let myself away from some of the other things I enjoyed," I admitted. "But I believe letting someone else take over my duties would be a bit like hiring someone to train that pet raven- it would never really be mine. I don't do my duty for my pride, but when something happens regarding it I'd like to know where the problem originated."

She was fascinating. A woman of obviously noble birth who worked, instead of dallying. How novel!
"Again, it seems a pity to take no time for yourself. Surely your work can't be so all consuming that you spend endless days bound to duty. Life cannot be all about duty and work." I leaned against a solid support and tipped my head to the side, studying her. What did her tells say about her?

"There is always more work if one digs deep enough," I replied, then clicking my tongue at an exotically colored songbird of some kind. SMiling slightly as the bird hopped around I turned my head to look at him over my shoulder, raising a brow at his expression. "And I would feel worse if I didn't accomplish my duty to the best of my ability. I have time to myself, I just make it a commodity so I enjoy it more."

"Hmmm, what an interesting notion. It makes sense in a way, but still, most would not see it so. They see duty as a shackle and you seem to embrace it. I admit, I would choose my personal time over duty any day. I am just blessed with an astonishingly lack of duty, so I don't have to make that choice. Prerogative of the second son I suppose." I straightened up and wandered a little closer to her, pitched my voice low.
"Are you some sort of saint then, to virtuously live for duty? I'd have to know the name of such a saint, to accord her my worship."

"No saint, just young enough to still have some idealism," I whispered back, following him with my gaze. "My name is Lessandrie. I'm afraid, though, if I told you my surname that you would gain understanding of my work ethic far too quickly. It is impossible for me to be rude though, so ask again and you shall have it, or guess to your heart's content- your Somerville features tells me that you will very quickly."

"I do so hate being predictable, as well as easily identified by face or reputation. So I'll simply defy any preconceived notions of my charming self and bid you good luck and good day, Saint Lessa. Mayhap next time we meet I'll ask for your benediction, as well as your name." I gave her a roguish smile and a wink before sauntering off. I really did have other things I needed to be doing, as much as I wanted to indulge both my guilty pleasures.

Smiling beautifically, as befitted a saint, I nodded and watched him go as I turned back to the finches and canaries, parakeets and cockatiels. It would be interestingto see him agian and he'd likely be at the Coronation, so there was a chance.
