I looked across the table as Marshall again read the parchment. I was shocked and angry, wishing I knew who was behind the attack so that I could grab my sword and go hunt them down. My fingers twitched, wishing for the feel of metal and my nostrils ached for the smell of hot blood.
Marshall looked up at me, and I could see the same needs echoed in his eyes. "What do we do?" he asked.
"Nothing. There is nothing we can do. That is what makes it all the worse. One more reason I have avoided cities and civilization. These issues will be dealt with by others and we will have no vent for our emotions. I much prefer a fight dealt with face to face and the feel of my sword running through deserving flesh," I replied, my voice almost a hiss.
I leapt up and opened my coffer. I pulled a large sack of coins out and tossed it to Marshall. "I am going to take advantage of your devotion and ask you to inform everyone else. Pass out that coin as needed, let people deal with this however they need. If they need an outlet through the Night Court, pay for it," I said.
He stood, gripping the sack in one hand, the parchment still in the other. "What about you? What are you going to do?" he asked.
"I am taking Belleza out. I need to be alone and think," I said. I moved to him and pulled him to me for a brief, but sincere embrace. Then turning, I strode from the house before anyone could stop me.
I had Belleza saddled and was out the front gate in what felt like mere heartbeats.
I turned out of the City and let my girl have her head. The wind flew through her mane, wiping my face and letting me pretend the tears of frustration and loss I was shedding where from something else.
