I found myself thinking of all the changes that seemed to be plaging my life, my gaze moving from vendor to vendor as I walked.

On my way home to Heliotrope, lost in my own thoughts, I managed to bump into a beautiful lady who was perusing the vendors. "Oh, excuse me, my lady," I said, sinking into a deep, apologetic curtsey.

I looked at the obviously adept-child, my brow raised and my lips pressed together in anoyance.
"You're excused." I replied cooly.

I had managed to slip away without the trail of footmen and guards that seemed to hang on me lately. I didn't know if it was by Dominic's orders or if it was just that they were so pleased to have people to tend to. Our townhome had been empty for so long and now it was filled with activity. You could almost see the joy of purpose in the servants faces. It was really a little nauseating.
Wrapped in a velvet cape the color of fresh blood and lined with sable, I casually wandered through the street vendors. I grinned as I watched an adept plow into… oh my…. Evangeline L'Envers. This might turn entertaining.

"Do they not teach you adept manners anymore?" I asked in a raised voice to the adept's back.

So cruel, her tone. My pride stung and I turned around to look at her, keeping my voice level and quiet. "My lady, they do. Heliotrope House is very well-mannered. I am sorry that I was clumsy, it has been almost four years since my last lesson."

I scoffed and shook my head.
"Great, another Heliotrope. You people breed faster then rabbits." I replied rolling my eyes.

Close enough to her what they were saying, I chuckled at Evangeline's words. Apparently the Duchess was allergic to true love.

I chuckled.
"My dear, why are you still talking to me. Don't you know your place?" I asked stepping forward to her, my arms crossed infront of me.
"Run along home child, you don't want to get into trouble with Valeraine. I can't afford two of you."

Inwardly I seethed. I was twenty, she couldn't have been much older, and yet she spoke to me with such derision. "I will, my lady. Have a good day." Curtseying very slightly, I turned away from her and began to head home.

I scoffed and watched the Heliotrope brat walk away from me and sighed, Damn Heliotrope adepts.

"It really is a tragedy the lack of respect adepts have now a days," I said to no one in particular but loud enough for Evangeline to hear. "One would almost believe they think themselves equals."

My head snapped to the direction of the voice, my eyes narrowing her and recognizing her immediately.
"What would you care Shahrizai?" I asked defensively.

"As you wish," I told her, inclining my head slightly and smiling.
My glance flicked to the vanishing back of the Heliotrope girl. Amazing how different her little encounter would have been had she shown the proper deference. It really was too bad you could beat them all like Valerians, it would do them good.
"What brought you to the market today?" I asked, my gaze returning to Evangeline.

I furrowed my brow at the woman and answered cautiously, I was no fool, my grandfather had spent time with the most notorious Shahrizai. I knew my place and knew theirs.
"Nothing in particular actually."

"There seems to be a lot of that going around," I said. I heard the tone in her voice and had to suppress a laugh. Unlike most Shahrizai, I reveled in my families reputation.

"And you?" I asked politely and without malice. At least she seemed friendly enough, I almost felt bad about how I treated the adept and thought I should at least try to not be rude.
"Boredom?"

"Boredom mixed with that feeling where the walls of tour own home begin to feel like a cage," I told her, smiling. "I don't do well with peace and calm."

I allowed the corner of my mouth to curl up in a smile.
"Perhaps, but chaos lends too much to headaches." I replied thinking of Janyx.

Trailing a gloved finger along the lines of a carved box on display on the cart, I answered, "Only when you are standing in the middle of the chaos, not on the outside enjoying the view."

"That's too bad," I replied. "It's usually well worth the effort."
With a chuckle I picked up a small carving of a rose done in ivory. I wondered how a street vendor had come into possession of something so valuable.
"I take it you've had a rough time of it with House Heliotrope?" I asked Evangeline.

"I suppose you could say that." I said in more of a mutter.

"Huh," I said, still fingering the rose. "I thought they were like Alyssum, all sweetness and sugar coated light. Never a foul thought or cross word."

"They are." I said gingerly as I watched her move, she played the game of a Shahrizai. Toying with me, even if it was subconscience.

I held up the rose to the vendor and he hesitantly named a price. I could tell he thought it too much, but in truth it was obvious he didn't know what he had. I handed over his full asking price and slipped the rose into a pocket in my cape.
"I'm sorry you've had such troubles then, it must have been something truly awful to cause such a reaction to a random member of that House," I said, sounding consoling.
