We walked down the street arm in arm, admiring the wares displayed in their carts. "What are you looking for?" I asked.

"Nothing in particular. That way I'm open to all." I grinned wryly. "Though I would like some things for my townhome. It's all my father's right now, I'd like to gie it my own touch."

"That's good," I said. "Myself, I need gloves to go with my dress."
I thought a minute. "Why not visit Mirsada Anezka's shop at some point?"

I had hardly forgotten that name... "Yes, I've been meaning to. But let's see if we can find you some gloves first. It's definitely more pressing than redecorating my home."

"If you say so," I said nonchalantly.
As we walked, I espied a cart laden with different accessories and I gently tugged Anacrasia's arm in that direction. "Over there."

I followed as we wandered over to a medium sized stall, laden with wares. My hand ran over the soft scarves, hiding a critical look at them. I simply hated when a new purchase fell apart.

I frowned as I examined a pair of gloves of black satin. The fabric was of good quality, but the stitching was subpar. I would only wear them for one night, but it would not do for a pair of gloves to fall apart at a fete as grand as the Shahrizais. "What think you, near-cousin?" I murmured.

I looked at them and wasn't really impressed. I shook my head slightly. "Unless she's going to give them to you for pennies, you can do better." I murmured near her ear.

Politely I replaced the gloves, before nodding to the proprietor and gently moving away. Once out of earshot, I replied, "It's a shame it's so hard to find anything of good quality off a cart these days."

"Your age is showing." I told her, mock serious. "Pretty soon the grey will start."
A few metres away lay another cart which would have been a sea of billowing fabric six months ago. But reality had interposed itself, and a good half of the cart had converted to warmer accessories. "How about over there?"

"If I'm aging, you're an old crone," I said crossly. As much as I knew she was jesting, I was getting older, and my childbearing years were slowly passing. It was high time to find a mate.
Nodding in agreement, we made our way over. This stand was better, and I picked up a pair of black silk gloves which would cover the elbows. "Shall I try them on?" I asked.

It seemed that I struck a chord, I thought to myself wryly. I wasn't trying to be cruel, but I knew the thoughts that were going through her mind, and was trying to encourage action. In my own way of course.
The gloves she picked out looked much superior to the last pair, and I nodded.

Slipping my arm out from hers, I pulled on the gloves. They slipped on like water, but held strong, smoothly sheathing my arms past the elbow. I admired how slim they made my arms appear. "What do you think?" I asked. "Shall I take them?"

"You need to ask?" I said with a small smile, watching her satisfaction.

"I suppose not," I said, tugging the gloves off and handing them to the vendor, who named a reasonable price. Handing him his fee, he wrapped the gloves in tissue and handed them back to me.
"Where to next?"

I linked arms with her again and we started walking down the street again. "Hmm. Let's see if we can find some things to brighten up my place."

"Curtains? Knicknacks?"

"No, I have enough knicknacks for two houses. I need fabric for curtains and uphostery in the sitting room, it's like a dungeon in there. And I need to redo the master bedroom. I loved my father, but his room really needs a woman's touch." It was a bit of a daunting task, especially since there were things in the house that were sentimental, if ugly.

I pointed to a cart laden with heavy fabrics. "Let's look there."

We wandered over at her suggetion, and I immediately spotted what I wanted. An apple green shot silk for the upholstery, and the same shade but darker for the curtains. It would work perfectly with all the wood in the sitting room. I waved the vendor over.

I murmured appreciatively at her choice. "Lovely," I said.

My glanc was full of contempt at his first offer, which he hastily lowered to a much more reasonable amount. I nodded and gave him the address, telling him tomorrow. The business was finished in a few moments, and we were off down the street again.
"And I need a nice art piece for the front foyer." I told her, then smiled. "I apologize, I was making a list this morning, and it's all at the front of my mind."

"Why not comission one from an Eglantine adept?" I asked. "Some are quite talented painters. If you want something foreign, there is always Mirsada Anezka's shop. And of course, there is this street to keep looking on."

I took another look up and down the street. "Well, I doubt we'll find anything here. I'll pop into Eglantine on another day, see if they have any promising adepts."

"It's just as well, I need to be getting home." I hugged her happily. "See you on Longest Night!"

"Around 6," I said, "I will have already bathed, so feel free to make use of the bath before your massage."

"Goodbye." I kissed Anacrasia back, then took my leave of her, walking around the corner to where my carriage was waiting. Longest Night couldn't come soon enough.
