Silent most of the way, Kamer only spoke up when giving directions. I screamed inside, wanting to turn around, and slap the man that I had known my entire life. I wanted to slap his arm like I had always done when I wanted to know what was wrong with him. He had never been silent with me for this long, and I wanted to know the reason.
I had guessed already... but I wanted to know.
The sun was low in the sky, and I knew I had only a short while to find what I needed. My feet took me at a quick pace in search of a masque vendor. After a short while, I found a small vendor, about ready to pack her things. The older woman, her face a plethora of wrinkles, looked up at me with a toothy smile.
"What can I do for you madame?" Her hoarse voice asked kindly.
"I'm looking for a certain masque. Painted silver, with a white crescent moon placed above the nose. Simple, yet stands out from the rest," I explained quickly. I didn't want to keep the elderly woman from packing up for the day. My eyes skimmed over her work. Beautiful masques, with unique swirl designs.
"Ah. Artemis. A strong figure you want to represent at the Midwinter Masque. Yes, I have just what you're looking for, I think." She bent over, grunting in pain. I winced, not wanting to cause her any trouble. It took a moment for her to straighten her spine once more, but once she did, she brought forth a masque from a hidden shelf.
Just what I wanted. Silver, with a white crescent with the tips pointed up was placed between the eyes. Four black jewels curved to outline the left eye from the bottom while another four curved to the outline above the right eye. Black swirls, defining the feminity of the masque, were painted from each eye hole. Holes had been punched into the sides of the masque, and a silver cord could be worn around the head.
"How much?" I asked.
"Thirty ducats." She stated.
"Twenty five," I replied.
"Twenty eight."
"Wonderful." I placed the pouch of ducats in her hand.
"Blessed Elua guide you, dear." She said, counting.
"And Artemis' strength stay with you," I smiled, taking the masque.
Turning to Kamer, I grinned excitedly, holding up the last part of the costume. And for a moment, he looked happy. Until he realized he was, of course. The walk home seemed even more silent.
