I'd never really been in the clothier's district before, so I decided to venture out; after all, I still needed a veil for my costume. Also, maybe an idea of gifts for my sisters- I knew them as though they were my own hands, so hopefully something would just jump out at me as a gift for them. Today I was actually dressed moderately decently, my hair in a loose bun at the back of my head with a hair stick holding it up. Smiling at those shopkeepers whose stalls I stopped to peruse I was light of step and carefree.

Once free of the Night Court proper, making my way to Mont Nuit was easy. Eglantine was out for a costume. Being under house arrest had it's down sides. No matter. Every dressmaker and cloth merchant in the clothier's district would be peddling masques and costumes for the infamous Midwinter Masque.
I found what I wanted with little trouble. The costume theme chosen for my house was a hummingbird. Really. I would go as a bird, but not that one. I was too predatory by half, and as I wasn't technically allowed to go, I didn't have to follow the rules.
I found the perfect cloak and masque. The cloak resembled the fluttering soft wings of a giant owl, all blacks and dark grays, feathers and strips of fluttering cloth. It would be ominous swirling behind me. Underneath it I would wear black breeches and boots and a leather vest Lucien had gifted me with. And to finish it would be the masque.
Looking into the demon yellow eyes framed by dark feathers and a wickedly sharp beak, it made my heart race. How would an animal feel, seeing those eyes as th owl swooped down on silent wings to devour it? How would Evangeline feel when I found her? I smiled, a thing almost feral and paid the merchant for his wares. He promised to have them delivered to the House with all discretion.
I had to get back before anyone noticed I was absent. I could only be 'hiding' for so long before Valerain figured out I was missing. But a flash of bright hair caught my attention. Jessamine. I smiled and strolled over to her. She was bent over some stall, perusing the wares. The devil in me made me lean close and whisper in her ear.
"Lady Fair, where, pray tell is your escort? Or do you like letting men peruse your 'wares'?"

Hearing a familiar voice at my ear I paused for a moment, eyes cutting sideways at him as I stilled, then let a mischevious smile crease my features as I slowly stood, turning to face Jaynx. He looked different, broken almost, though of course he hid it. That was Jaynx through and through. "People may, of course, peruse all they like, as long as they don't intend to try and order off the menu for free," I said back in jest. "What about yourself? Here for any particular purpose?" My eyes were curious but open and friendly. "Have you been doing alright?"

"Oh deviltry I suppose, and doing well enough. A bit of shopping, clandestinely escaping from my House and thumbing my nose at rules and structure. The usual." I tried being casual about it, but too much was racing in my thoughts, and she was, after a fashion, my friend. One sided it seemed in my mind, I made a terrible friend.

Raising a skeptical brow, I asked, "Is that really all, my friend? Come and have something to drink with me, tell me how you've been. Something is not alright up here-" I ran a finger across his forehead- "And I can see that, even as oblivious as I am. Besides, I recently saw Caraf getting her costume with her fiance and Evangeline with them. She seemed unlike herself." At that I gave him a significant look, full of questions. If worst came to worst, I could draw him out by making the wrong assumptions, though I doubted they were.

My eyes narrowed as she mention Evangeline. So she was going to the masque. And all the questions in her eyes. I knew I didn't want to answer them, but in a way I did. I needed someone to talk to, and she could have information on Evie. I swallowed my pride.
"Fine. Let's get drinks, but we must speak quickly. I'll explain that too. Lead on, Lady Fair."

"It'll be quick, I promise," I said with a sympathetic smile, wondering what trouble he had gotten into this time. The Cockerel wasn't too far from here and was busy enough no one would notice his presence if he really didn't want to be seen out and about, so I turned and began to lead him there.
