Walking through the clothier's district, I perused the different stalls looking for the perfect fabric. It would have to be black satin, with a pattern, something very subtle. And tight. I wanted a dress that was tight in the bodice and not too poufy in the skirt. Something to match the leather of a crop.
I grinned in spite of myself. It had been too long since my last assignation. Too long.

My assignation with Navarre was more then wonderful but it was made dirty when one of the other adepts told me August had been by. I need to get out and I had some money saved in my coffer for just an occasion. I walked through the Clothier's district hoping to take my mind off August and what turn my life had taken.

As I admired a rack of dresses in various shades of red (not what I was looking for, but beautiful nonetheless), I spied a young woman observing the wares. I watched her, not caring if she saw me or not. No signet rings, therefore, not a noble or titled peer. Probably an adept. And there were the faintest marks on her wrists. Marks from bindings. A Valerian adept. I smiled wickedly before composing myself and slowly making my way towards her.

I picked up a deep red gown of velvet, a crushed wine, and examined it; feeling a pair of eyes on me I turned my head slightly and noticed a woman watching me. Keeping my eyes on the gown I continued to look over the it.

I approached her casually, looking at the gown she had picked out, then at her. Meetiing her gaze, I said, "Lovely. It suits you." I refrained from commenting on everything else I knew about her, I didn't want to scare her away.

I smiled up at the woman and nodded. "It is but I have too many just like them." I replied feeling a cat and mouse game.

"You must do well," I said quietly, "to have many dresses such as this one." The dress was very fine, and would probably cost her quiet a bit if she purchased it.

I shook my head. "I meant the colour." I replied blushing slightly.

"And I meant the cut and style," I said with a coy smile. "I like it when adepts are well dressed. Especially Valerians."

I smiled blushing softly, it was an automatic response to her comment.
"I'll remember that." I replied softly.

So I was right, I thought dryly to myself. "What's your name?" I demanded.

"Mara my lady." I said with a bobbed curtsy. It was quite obvious that she knew I was a valerian and I was curious at hers.

"Mara," I said, tasting her name on my lips. "Mara, I am Soleil Belfours. It is lovely to know you."

I smiled and curtsied deep, of course the secretary of the privy seal, I went over everything I knew about her and her family in my head. "The pleasure is mine Marquise." I said, my eyes downcast slightly as I curtsied.

I smiled. "I think the pleasure will be yours," I said with a touch of irony. She was perfect, and I wondered what her fee was. I would go see her Dowayne soon enough, and I wondered if she was contracted for Longest Night.
"What brings you here?"

I wanted to chuckle at her comment, both humorous and exciting but instead I inclined my head.
"I needed a distraction," I replied honestly. "And I'm looking for a new gown if I find one at a good price." I smiled turning slightly back to the gown I had been fingering.
"And you my lady, if it is not too much of me to ask." I inquired carefully.

"I am looking for a gown to wear for Longest Night," I said. I was one for the truth, not for games, and sometimes that meant I was brutally honest, sometimes cruel. "And an adept to wear on my arm." Valerian House had been my planned next stop, but now I thought maybe I wouldn't have to go after all.

I nodded blushing slightly. "Have you found either my lady?" I asked coyly.

"I have not had much luck with the dress, but with the adept..." I grinned at her. "I might have found something."

I kept my eyes averted from the Marquise and nodded.
"Then you are half way there." I commented softly.

I chuckled. "I suppose I am."
"Do you have a patron, Mara?"

I looked over at her from the corner of my eye. "It which manner my lady, I have a few patrons."

I met her gaze. "Let me rephrase my question. Are you patronized such that if I were to request to contract you, I would be refused?"

I looked at her fully. "No my lady," I said clasping my hands together. "At the present I'm free."

"Good," I said. "Then it is settled. I will see your Dowayne about a contract as soon as I find my dress. The assignation will take place tomorrow night, and if you please me, I will offer you a Longest Night contract." I watched for her reaction.

"Good." I reached out to stroke her cheek, grazing it with my fingernails. "Until tomorrow night, then."

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted the perfect dress, exactly how I had imagined it. Pulling it off the rack, I tossed a purse of ducats at the vendor and handed the gown to my man, who had been waiting to the side. Eyeing Mara a last time, I said, "Goodbye," then turned and headed towards Valerian.
