I stood on the ramparts over looking the magnificent sea as the sun set. It really was a breath taking site but then again all Illyrians are drawn to the sea like a moth to flame. My cutlass hung comfortably by my side as just the same all Illyrians learn to use one early and use it well. Of course due to the absolute hypocrisy and tyranny of Caerdicca Unitas we are all considered pirates! The bitter bile once more rose in my throat at the thought. By the gods! We do what we have to, to survive!
I drew a breath and calmed myself as it would not do to set off on my Uncle’s assignment with anger in my heart. My duty was to set about changing this injustice in Terre d’ Ange and by the gods I would succeed. It was at that point I heard the approach of my Uncle. Not a great task really considering the Ban always had about a dozen guards with him and it was hard for that number to move in silence. I gave a tight lipped smile at the though and not for the first time was very thankful that I stood at least 2 heartbeats away from the throne.
Turning I faced my Uncle Vasilii Kolcei known as Zim Sokali Ban of Illyria and bowed deeply. “Your majesty” my Uncle responded by whacking me in the back of the head. “Oh belay that already Pièter and skip the groveling in bilge water when we are alone.” This of course amused me as I rose because well did I mention my Uncle had a dozen guards in tow? “Of course Vasilii” I responded with a smile as I rose “Do you have any words of wisdom before I am off with the morning tide?”
My uncle smirked ‘Try not to get killed or your father will never forgive me.” He then grew more serious “Actually I want you to keep in mind you are not going to right all of history’s injustices in one masterful twist of your tongue. Be patient and take small bites letting certain things that annoy you slide.” I bobbed my head yes “Excellent advice, do you have anymore?” He gave me a roguish wink then “If you decide the best way to sure up things is to wed make sure she is comely and talented in the bed chamber.”
