As the carriage moved towards home I grew more and more agitated. There was the a trembling in the air as if the whole city was waiting for news.
Once home, I dashed upstairs and after a quick bath changed into more comfortable clothing. I knew that whatever it was I would hear when it was time, but the waiting was going to make sleep impossible. Instead of wandering around and pacing, I went to the kitchen and cooked. I lost myself in the spices, herbs, and ingredients.
An urgent pounding on the front door broke my trance and I stopped, hands covered in chocolate from the miniature cakes I had been frosting. I watched as my housekeeper ran to the door, I heard quick muffled voices and then the door closing. She returned with a folded piece of parchment in her hand. I nodded, unable to speak as I watched her open it and begin to read.
To whom it may concern. It is my sad duty to inform the subjects of this letter that the crown has suffered a great loss. During the evening of King Ambrose's coronation celebration, his carriage was attacked. The Queen was murdered and King Ambrose left for dead. Thankfully though, King Ambrose lives but sleeps without waking. Since the King is unable to perform his duties an Acting Regent must step in. It has been decided that I, Princess Sabrina de la Courcel, in line of succession, will be Acting Regent as till such time as he wakes.
By the time she finished reading, her hands were shaking and tears streamed down her face. Before I could speak, I had to swallow a lump in my throat. "Thank you. Go tell the rest of the staff," I said in a quiet voice.
She turned and ran towards the back of the house. I looked down at my hands, still covered in chocolate and at the table full of miniature cakes. They seemed far to pretty to exist on a day where such news was being spread. Not knowing what else to do, and still being nothing more than a cook at heart, I picked up another tiny cake and returned to frosting.
