A knock came at my door, annoying me enough to get me to slam down the brush I had in my hands. I let out a frustrated sigh, I'd said I wasn't to be disturbed before my evenings' patron arrived, and that wasn't for two more hours at least. "What is it?" I asked, rolling my eyes but keeping a civil tongue and picking up my hairbrush again.
A small voice came through the door, "Miss, there is a lady by the name of Quorra wishing to see you," she said, a name I had only heard a few times in my life. I froze - It couldn't be! I scrambled to put my hair up out of my face and put my robe on around my revealing bodice and undergarments.
"Alright, Elena, you may see her in." I told the girl, not bothering even to walk to my door. I thought frantically to myself about the few people I knew who had that name and none I could think of would ever look for me here. Except for her, but it could not possibly be!! I wasn't sure if I was right but that was the only possibility that came to mind.
Another knock came shortly and I breathed deeply, trying to settle my nerves. "Come," I said, trying not to hold my breath as the door nob turned.
But there she was, just as my father had described her. She just a little taller than I but just as beautiful, even at the age of forty, her hair just lightly gray at her temples and laugh lines etching the corner of each eye. She was smiling and looking at me with tears in her eyes.
"Amadora, my Amadora, it is you." She said, her tears falling down her face and her arms reaching out to me.
I choked on my own tears and then sobbed, running into her arms, "Mother!" I cried, holding her tightly, my hair falling out of its haste knot, "They told me you died!!" I said, tears streaming down my face.
"Hush, hush now, I'm here my child." She said, patting my hair and letting me cry my fill. It was only when thoughts of my evening's patron came to mind that I let her go, wiping tears from my eyes. "Where have you been all these years, what happened in that storm and why did everyone lie to me about you?" I asked her, my questions running together in my haste to ask her everything all at once.
"Oh my darling, they never knew the truth. Please, don't blame your father. He did what was best and easiest telling you I was never found after the storm. They never knew because I couldn't tell them." she said, sitting on my bed and settling me beside her, "You see my father told me I had to leave when you were old enough to survive on your own. I had to go back and no one come looking for me. He wouldn't let me stay with your father unless I agreed to his terms, he wouldn't have it." She said, the loss and the pain she had gone through, the sorrow and the worry she had endured not knowing about me all these years was there in the look she gave me, daring to believe and now crying to finally see my face.
"I'm so sorry you had to live without me, but it took sixteen years for my father to pass on and another two for me finally find you." She said, cupping her hand to my cheek.
A few days later she summoned me to her place where the two of us planned to leave La Serissima and go live in Terre d'Ange where we would finally be able to be a family.
