I didn't know still exactly where I was going, so I had the carriage drop me off an a random street and I began to walk. Not wanting to take the chance of encountering someone who would stop me, I kept my head down.
My mind wandered and I wasn't sure how long I'd been standing still before I realized it. Lifting my head, I looked around. I was standing before Kushiel's temple.
Suddenly my path was clear.
The tears began their slow trek down my cheeks before I had crossed the threshold.
Bronze masked priests. An offering of the heavy pouch on my belt. Stripped naked to the waist. Bonds. Whip. My screams filling the chamber. Open wounds and salt water. Soft bandages and peace.
Peace.
When I left the temple I knew where I was going next.
The peace still clung to me as I entered Elua's temple. A beautiful young girl removed my boots. The eyes of the priest were soft and accepting, and his smile kind.
Drawing the bracelet from my pocket, I slipped it into his hand. He didn't even look at it, only nodded and handed me an anemone before stepping aside.
The peace within me seemed to fill the temple as I made my across the hibernating winter grounds. Elua stood serene in front of me and I sobbed slightly as I sank to my knees in front of him. I laid the flower at his bare feet as I cried for all those I had loved and lost. I prayed that they were all safe at his side in the true Terra d'Ange. I prayed for them each, saving Mara til last. She was my sacrifice, the price of my sanity and I prayed for him to watch over her.
When there were no more prayers, I knelt in quiet peace until the hand of the priest drew me back. He touched my head and smiled again.
Rising, I made my way back into the City, once again the man I had once been.
