I had thought that I would spend my life in Gentian House, and by my fifteenth year I had accepted that fact. But the day I met Fronsac, I changed my mind. My Dowayne, Octavier no Gentian, informed me that I was to have my marque purchased by a very influential peer. Gregoire de Fronsac, my new mentor, arrived with a small carriage and a matching pair of blood bays, an handsome man stepped from the cab and smiled seeing me. Till that day I was unsure of who had bought my marque, but upon seeing Fronsac’s smiling face I knew right away.
“Duc de Fronsac, it is good to see you again.” Octavier made a bow to him as Fronsac stepped forward. Duc, I hadn’t known that, in Gentian I was seen as unworthy to practice and now I was the foster child of a Duc.
“Dowayne Octavier well met. I see Monique is ready, let us be on our way then.” I smiled crookedly at him as he turned ushering me to the carriage. I turned to see Octavier nod and turn quietly back into Gentian House, I sighed turning back as we walked to the carriage, I would never see Gentian House again. Fronsac handed me into the cab of the carriage-for-four, I slid across the velvet seat still clutching my only possessions.
“Here, hand me those.” Fronsac reached in taking the bundle of clothing and a few treasures left from my previous life. He turned and headed to the back of the carriage then returned empty handed, he entered the cab and thumped the roof of the cab sending the carriage forward. I looked out the window watching the Night Court fade from view, once we enter Nights Doorstep I turned to Fronsac smiling.
“This may be an adjustment for you, my home is not run like it is at Gentian.” He fidgeted with his doublet and shirt.
“Yes my lord.” I glanced at him smiling then turned back staring straight ahead.
“Please Monique, call me Fronsac.” He smiled so nervously it made me giggle.
“What?” Fronsac smiled handsomely at me.
“Nothing, you are nervous no?” I smiled.
“Well, yes. I am not use to having others around me, I don’t even have a regular maid.” He smiled and chuckled slightly.
“I understand, but then why did you choose to buy marque.” I looked deeply at him; he cleared his throat and smiled.
“I do important work for nobles as well as Prince Delaunay de la Courcel. I am what I like to call a detective. When strange things happen where no explanation can be found, I search for the answers using theories that at not usually applied. It’s a bit of a new idea.” He smiled again.
“And I come in where?” I smiled sure that I knew where it was going, but I needed him to say it.
“Well, you have specific talents that I need for you to employ in order to help with my investigations.” I smiled and nodded.
“My talents as a servant of Naamah?” He chuckled.
“No,” he took a pause as he regained himself. “Though that does play a factor, but it’s your other skills that I need.”
“I see, as some one who can read people. As a former adept of Gentian.” He smiled and the carriage came to a halt. I hadn’t realized it but we were already at my new home.
“Come, we can speak of this in more detail later.” He exited the cab offering his arm to help me out. I stood staring at the modest town home as Fronsac retrieved my things, he thanked and paid the driver and ushered me to the door. A middle-aged woman waited at the door greeting us with a pleasant smile.
“Duc de Fronsac, Monique no Fronsac, welcome home.” I glanced to Fronsac who smiled.
“I though you said you had no servants?” A wry smile broke on his face.
“Well I didn’t till I realized that I could always be here to make dinner for you. For the next year you will be tutored and study many things, you won’t be able to come with me every time I go somewhere.” He smiled and I nodded.
“Marie, would you please show Monique her room. I will be in the library till dinner.” Fronsac smiled handing my things to Marie, he patted my shoulder as he headed to the library.
“Follow me Monique.” She smiled and headed to a large staircase, I followed her as she headed up the stairs. We past one room, then another, and at the third room Marie pushed the door open revealing a large four-post bed and a large desk; a door marked a large walk in closet revealing beautiful gowns all in my size.
“Well, I’ll leave you to it then.” Marie smiled.
“Thank you Marie.” She exited leaving me to study my new room, one wall held a small bookshelf with books on Naamah and books found at Gentian. I gazed around the room, my new life, a new family, things were going to change and I was more then excited.
