"Are we going to get to go to the fair, father? Ermande and I wanted to see the Tsingani before they leave town, can we go?" I asked, practically begging my father to let us go to town to see the open fair and visit the market. I hadn't yet reached my sixteenth name day but it was fast approaching and I wanted the chance to spy out the things my father might give me as gifts.

"Yes please, mother already said I could go if I went with Danni." I said, adding my plea to my cousin's, my grin eager and my eyes wide at the thought of my first chance to see the fair. Danni was several years older than me and had been to the fair many times before so he would know exactly where we should go, but we had to get permission first.

I grinned looking down at my younger cousin momentarily. We'd grown up together and had done almost everything with each other since he had grown up enough to follow me around. It was fun having a little brother and I knew I could look after him.
"Alright, you both can go. On one condition; You are not to loose your escort like you did last year, young man." Father said, his finger pointing at me in a serious manner but his eyes sparkling with pride and a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"I promise, we won't loose him." I replied, my smile just barely visible beneath the serious look I gave my father.
"Then you may go, but be sure get back before nightfall. I don't want the two of you out after dark, and neither does your mother." He told us, his words bringing back my grin.
Without another word I tagged Ermande on the shoulder, silently challenging him to a race to the stables and took off, waving to my father over my shoulder and laughing out loud as I rounded the corner of the hall putting several lengths between me and my cousin.

"Thanks Uncle," I said, racing off after Danni, my long legs closing the gap between us. D'antoine was older yes, but I was faster.
"Cheeter!" I called after him, laughing and racing down the stairs leading to the stable yard. He would probably beat me but I didn't care; we finally had permission to go to the fair.

"I don't think so!" I called, putting on speed when I hit the yard. Long stretches were my strong point and so I was able to keep the lead I had on Ermande.
I was still laughing hard when I hit the stable doors; I had beaten Ermande by a few seconds and had just enough time to turn around to face him.

Bursting through the doors to the stable I amost ran right into my cousin, out of breath and breathing hard, "You cheeted!" I said, punching him in the arm and turning to find my favorite horse among the stables.

"So, you do it all the time," I added grinning, turning to help the stable hand fit my horse with his saddle. "Besides, I should be allowed to cheat; My birthday is just around the corner."

"That is no excuse," I scoffed, he always pulled this sort of thing and I wasn't going to fall for it again, I was older now and a lot less guilable. Grabbing a carrot from the treat bin in the stable hall I gave it to my horse to keep him quiet for a moment as the stable hand saddled him.
Patting the horse on the shoulder I turned back to Danni, "You didn't play fair, but I'll let it slide for now. Just don't be surprised when I get you back." I said, grinning from ear to ear as I leaned under my horses neck to look at him.

I laughed at that, he was young but he was bold I could give him that. "Alright, but peace for now, okay?" I said, pulling the bridle on my horse and checking to make sure everything was in place.
I heard the stable doors swing open just as a voice called out, "Hey there you two, you're not to be leaving without us." He said.
"I hear tell there is to be a trip to the town fair, do I have that right?" Another added.
"Sure do." I called, turning around to see Aldan and Jerrod walking down the hall. I was glad to see them. Of all my father's Chevaliers they were my favorites and I was glad father had sent them. They both went to their mounts and had them saddled and ready in no time, just as eager as Ermande and I to be out in the sunshine and on the road.
