It'd been about two weeks since I sent my letter back home to Siovale. I'd not expected a response so quickly, so when an overloaded carriage pulled up to the townhouse in the morning, I was quite shocked. It was a rather warm day for the time of year, so I was clad only in training breeches.
"Taaaaabien!" Came a nostalgic voice.
"Rene?" I called back. Sure enough, a once petite girl popped down out of the carriage, running over and hurling herself at me.
"Well, look at you, I remember the other servants said you found someone and went gallivanting off from the estate." I said hugged her back in a warm embrace.
"I did, but there was an accident." Rene said dourly. I see, that's a shame. But she cheered up quickly. "I arrived about a day after they received your letter, and I wanted to get out, so I decided to come with. You did mention about some help, didn't you?"
"Yes, well, yes I did I suppose. Well Rene, what have you brought me then, besides your cute little self. How old are you again?" I asked guiding her to the carriage.
"Twenty three, and I brought you lots of stuff." She said sweetly. "We got a combination of your wardrobe, plus some left overs from grandfather, and...your father." She said the last part quietly before quickly moving on. "We also have a good portion of the library, you did mention something about starting teaching or studying."
I nodded silently. "Anything else?"
"Oh, some stuff for me of course, clothes, linens, and..." She waved me over quietly, and whispered as she handed me a hidden chest underneath a false bottom in the chest.
"Your mother sends her regards." She whispered sweetly. I opened the chest, and found a nice tithe in there.
"That's..." I stammered before quickly closing the chest. That was a lot of ducats. From the looks of it, I could make my residence in the City a permanent fixture, which was a very appealing idea. Elua, there might even be some left over. I'll have to see my factor.
"Your mother wishes you well in your endeavors, and would like to speak to you sometime. She gave us a letter," she said handing said letter to me. "It says that she might visit sometime next year, something important too."
"You read it?" I questioned.
"Well, it was a long ride, and I was bored." Rene pouted, and I softened.
"I suppose it's all right. Shemazai breed curious folk." I mused tousling her hair. "I guess we should get these things moved in. What about them." I said pointing to the retainers.
"Well, there to guard the estate, so they'll have to head back, and take the carriage too. But, we'll strip it clean." She gave me a wink. With that, I gave her a friendly jest, and helped the retainers unload. It took a good portion of the day to get everything out, a couple large items tied securely to the carriage. But, afterward, it looked quite normal living space, if still a bit tame. No matter.
I heard a cheery scream and a thud as I came down the stairs putting away the last trunk.
"Eeeee! Do I get to stay here?! It's such a big room." Rene exclaimed.
"Well, I suppose." I said teasingly. "But you'll have to call me M'lord from now on." I didn't mean it really, Rene and I had been childhood friends since she was a babe.
"Oh, yes M'lord, I'll be your best servant." She teased back. I laughed, then we both did.
"Well, welcome to the City of Elua Rene. We'll have to do some shopping I guess. Food, general needs, " I gave a smirk, "And perhaps some new clothes. I'm sure you have better taste than I." She just smiled cheerily at me.
This place would feel a lot like home so very soon. Time to unpack.
