I rode back from the hunt, a couple of rabbits slung over my saddle, when I saw Grandfather standing outside. “Grandfather,” I greeted him, “what’s the matter?”
“Aramis,” he said, “do you recall when we spoke about you possibly moving to the City of Elua?”
I nodded, dismounting and handing my reins to a stableboy. “What of it?”
“I have been reading your parents’ will, and it was their wish that you take over the business they left.” Grandfather rubbed his hands together nervously. “There is a shop in the City that has been left in the care of executors these past fifteen years. It is your time to take over.”
I rubbed the bridge of my nose with my thumb and forefinger. “How long before I leave?” I asked.
“Three days.”
“Well,” I said, handing off the dead rabbits to a maid, “no time to lose then.”
Three days later, I set off for the City, to reignite my parent’s fortune.
