It was only a couple days after the Coronation and I was working on cleaning up my study, arranging papers and considering the things that had happened since. My next job was my pleasure-room, somewhat cleaned but not perfectly straightened from when I'd had Evangeline there. She was such a kitten, but I wondered what she'd do if I dared speak to her in the light of day. Her pride was a very strong force.
A soft tap on my door and I called permission to enter to whichever one of my servants it was- an older man, brother to the butler, and looking grave. "A messenger just carried this in, my lord," he told me quietly before handing me the missive.
My father's neat writing covered the envelope and I knew it had to be important to warrant a rider for this one letter alone; as the servant waited I read quickly. A fall over a cliff while drunk- and my cousin Theodor was so easily killed. And I made heir.
Almost immediately I put the surprise of these events behind me and my mind began to work, quickly factoring everything in. There was much to be done, including informing Her Majesty of the change, which I didn't relish. She'd once been close to Theodor, though since they'd had a falling-out. With sure steps I strode to my desk and readied a quill. "Feed the rider and let him rest, I have messages for him to carry back to the manor," I told the butler's brother, who nodded and left to make preparations.
