"Thank you sir, but it's not quite that simple. There are others that share her heart I'm afraid." I replied, managing a slight smile. It was the life of the adept, but sometimes I wished it was different.

“Is that so?” I asked, an eyebrow quirking. He seemed to have a rather wistful air, even if he strove to maintain appearance. For myself, I’d always agreed that Rae did indeed go to Mandrake, but the issue of feelings had never come forward. If it did… I wasn’t sure how I would react. “And what do you think of that?” I asked neutrally, not wanting to betray my own opinion on the matter, for it could perhaps influence him..

"It is what it is," I replied philosophically, trying not to be negative. Elua preached against jealousy after all. But my hand gave away my negativity with an increase in throbbing.

"Not always that easy, is it?" I offered sympathetically. It seemed to me, though, that if he loved that woman as he said, he had to set her free... but that didn't mean he wasn't allowed his pain...

I smiled at that. "No. Nothing worthwhile ever is. But we love each other, and for now it's more than enough."

I gave him a considering look. "I'm no priest of Elua," I admitted. "Holy Eisheth knows, I'm not even D'Angeline. But I was raised like one of you, and from what I know, you have it right. It's simple, isn't it?" I offered, "as long as you act with love, and it seems you are..."
I smiled, and added, "But that doesn't mean you're not entitled to your own occasional brooding, and when you feel the urge, you're more than welcome to come brood here." I chuckled, and added, "You know, the Broodatorium." I rolled my eyes. So much for my attempt at humor.

I chuckled. "You make it sound as if nothing else is done here but the brooding," I said with a light smile. His offer of friendship touched me, and I met his eyes as my whole hand reached out and grasped his in gratitude. "There are few people who would offer such a thing. I thank you Docteur."

I grasped his hand with sincere appreciation, and smiled. "But of course, Adin," I replied with a grin of amusement. "Though if you intend to come here for the brooding, you might as well call me Siegfried. That will in fact lessen the level of activity of the broodatorium," I told him with a warm smile.

I chuckled again, and then a knock sounded at the door. "Just as long as you realize that offer extends both ways Siegfried." I told him as I sat up.
Before either of us could answer the door, it opened for my mother's face to peer in. She took one look at how I was holding my hand, and her brow furrowed with worry. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but I was so worried. Are you alright baby?"
"I'll be fine Mama, just need some rest is all." I hated to see her so flustered, though she hid it well. "Thank you Docteur. I'll see you in a week, if not sooner."

I observed the interaction between Adin and his mother, finding it not so different from the one I had with my own mother figure. Love doesn't bother with blood ties, it seems.
"But of course," I replied amiably. "Your son will be alright, Madam," I told her reassuringly. "It is just as he said."
It always amused me, how sometimes the families needed to hear it from the chirurgeon, rather than from the patient. Go figure. "I will see you in a week," I told Adin with a smile. "Don't forget this," I added, handing the salve in the generic direction of both him, and his mother.
Huh. She wasn't as shy as he was, no doubt. That was an interesting consideration.

I got to the salve before she could. I wanted to sleep in my bed tonight at Alyssum, not be mothered at home. And if I was holding the medicine, I had the choice. She put her arm around me and peppered me with questions, and I sent Siegfried a smile as I let her lead me out. My hand had began throbbing again as soon as I was upright and moving again, and I only answered her important questions. I knew she meant well, but it was going to be a long walk home.

The little interplay made me smile inwardly. Mothers... Such a recurrent theme in the clinic, parents who overbore their kids, even as they strove for autonomy. I smiled back at Adin, and let them leave, not bothering with the administrative issues - those could be handled when he came back the following week.
I started picking up the room, and disposing of the soiled equipment, preparing the bunsen beak and the support. Sterilization, always, was the key.

*Six days later*
The last six days had been tough. You don't think about how much you use a limb until you have to be aware of everything you do with it. I had also felt very cooped up, since I couldn't go out into the gardens. And by Naamah, it was spring. The best time of year to be out.
So I was eager to have the stitches removed, and was almost impatient as I waited for Siegfried in the examination room.

Joelle advised me that the next appointment had arrived, and I smiled, knowing it was Adin. I was glad to see he had come back a day earlier than planned, though I wondered if it meant the salve was less effective in deeper wounds. I'd have to look into it, perhaps discuss the issue of the cacti with my supplier.
"Good to see you again, Adin," I said with a broad smile as I entered the examination room. "How are you?"

"Much better, thank you." I said, smiling. "How have you been?"

I smiled in contentment before I answered his question. "You know, the usual, wake up, go to work, go home..." I went to the counter and picked up the little scissors that would cut the thread, the pinchers to remove it, and a swab of disinfectant. "Can you extend your hand, please?"

I followed the docteur's orders. "I must admit, I'll be glad to get these out. Though I think secretly my mother had a ball fussing over me."

"All mothers are the same," I replied with a chuckle as I examined his hand. "Eager to see us grow up, and sad to see their baby isn't a baby anymore."
His hand looked good, quite good indeed, and I made a sound of approval. "This will sting a little," I told him before I applied the swab.

Even with the warning, I hissed a little. "Yes they are," I agreed, "and yes it does."

I lifted an eyebrow, and said, "I told you..." not exactly bothering to tell him which one it was I was referring to, though it was both, really.
"Your hand looks good," I told him as I discarded the swab. "You'll be good as new in no time." The little pinch was in my hand, and I installed it on the first stitch. "Here we go," I told him as I took the scissors. "This shouldn't hurt too much."

Again he was right, but I wasn't expecting the sensation as the stitch almost went twang like a guitar string. "Odd feeling," I commented.

"It is, isn't it?" I replied with a smile. I slipped the scissor's edge delicately between his skin and the yarn, and cut it. Very gently, I proceeded to removing the yarn from his skin. I was content - it came out in one piece.
"There, how did that go?"

"Not bad," I admitted, watching his deft hands work. "Not nearly as bad as when it went it." I looked away again when the holes left by the yarn began to bleed a little.

Inwardly, I shook my head as he winced, but I couldn't blame him - some did indeed faint at the sight of blood. I got the second swab, and said, "It will sting a little. Again. Best to tell him.
"Ready for the next one?" I asked quietly. This would take a while - there were five stitched to remove, all in all.

"Sure," I replied.
"So did you do any brooding on your own between my visits?" I asked, both as something else to think of and to try out our new friendship.

"Not as much as I might have led you to believe," I replied amiably, "but perhaps a little." I said as I repeated the operation for the second stitch. It came out nicely, this one, the wound neatly clean around the yarn. "How about you?"

The second one was easier, and I was glad. "Perhaps a little," I replied, smiling a bit wryly. "Every time I go outside I'm reminded I can't go get my nails dirty. And Allisande has been busy."

"You'll get your hands dirty soon enough," I replied with a smile. "I think you should be able to garden today, if the pain doesn't bother you. Just wear gloves..."
I started on the third set, and it seemed a little tricky for the crease. Knowing from previous experience that Adin would need the distraction, I asked, as I started the job meticulously, "Allisande, is it? That's a pretty name."

The now familiar twang sensation struck again, and I took his distraction gratefully. "It suits her. She's a very beautiful woman."
I thought for a moment. "It is normal for a woman to become... moody when she's pregnant, right?"

"Absolutely," I replied, eyes still on the task. "Some become temperamental, some cry, some scream, others develop strange culinary habits. It has to do with the change of humor - particularly during the first three months," I explaned as I extracted the yarn. I paused in my work then, being at a natural stopping point, and asked, matter-of-factly, "how far is she along?"
I assumed it was Allisande he was talking about, but of course it wasn't a sure guess - he'd paused before the question. He'd tell me, if he wanted to.
